A "social symptom" is something in society that everyone treats as a problem or embarrassment — an unfairness, a glitch, an exception — but that actually holds the whole system together and is the hidden source of what people get out of it.
Definition
The social symptom names the structural analogue, at the level of the collective or social formation, to what the individual symptom is for the subject: not an obstacle or malfunction interrupting the smooth operation of social enjoyment, but the very condition of possibility of that enjoyment. Just as the individual symptom is the disguised form through which a subject secures and sustains its relation to jouissance — the knot that holds the subject together by staging an apparently unwanted disruption that in fact delivers satisfaction — the social symptom performs the same structural function for the ideological order. It is a particular element that appears, from within the logic of the social universal (freedom, equivalence, the rights of man), as an anomaly or pathological exception, yet is in truth the site where the constitutive antagonism and the libidinal economy of that order are concentrated and made to work.
In Žižek's reading, following Lacan's remark that Marx "invented the symptom," the social symptom is the fissure or asymmetry within the bourgeois universal that simultaneously belongs to and subverts it — labour-power, the proletariat, the commodity form itself. The symptom is not outside the system; it is the system's own truth in distorted, displaced form. Ideology, on this account, is not false consciousness but the very organization of social reality around the non-knowledge of this symptomatic knot. McGowan extends this logic by insisting that the social symptom, like the individual one, appears as a barrier to enjoyment while in fact marking the very possibility of it: what ideology promises to remove (the symptom) is what it secretly relies upon to deliver satisfaction at all.
