Prepsychosis

Prepsychosis designates the subjective state immediately preceding a psychotic break — a liminal condition in which the structural inadequacy of the symbolic order has not yet produced full decompensation but is already making itself felt as an affective-phenomenological intimation. In Lacan's account in Seminar III, this state is characterised by the subject's dawning, vertiginous sense that something foundational is missing: a hole opens at the level of the signifier, specifically the absence left by the foreclosure of the Name-of-the-Father. The subject has not yet been overwhelmed — the imaginary compensations (stable identifications, social crutches, borrowed symbolic functions) that have until now papered over the structural hole are still partially operative — but they are beginning to fail. The "feeling of coming to the edge of a hole" is therefore not a metaphor for anxiety in the neurotic sense; it is a phenomenological registration of the actual structural void that Foreclosure produces in the Symbolic.

Prepsychosis is thus strictly a temporal and positional concept: it names the threshold at which the imaginary scaffolding that has allowed the subject to function despite the absence of the paternal metaphor begins to give way, but before the full rupture — the eruption of the foreclosed signifier from the Real in the form of hallucination or delusion — has occurred. It is not a separate clinical structure but a phase-concept within psychosis as a structure: the subject is already psychotic in the structural sense (the foreclosure has always already occurred), but the full decompensation has not yet been triggered. This aligns with the Lacanian principle that the clinical structures are not dynamic states but permanent structural positions; what changes is not the structure itself but the degree to which imaginary resources can compensate for the symbolic deficit.

The concept of prepsychosis appears in jacques-lacan-seminar-3 (p. 215) in the context of Lacan's extended theorisation of the psychotic structure, and it can only be properly understood against the backdrop of three canonical concepts it presupposes: Foreclosure, Clinical Structures, and the Name-of-the-Father. As the Foreclosure entry makes clear, the structural hole in the Symbolic is constituted once and for all by the failure of primordial affirmation — the Name-of-the-Father is never inscribed. Prepsychosis names the experiential and clinical correlate of the moment when the imaginary compensations that have concealed this hole begin to erode, before the foreclosed signifier erupts in the Real as hallucination. It is therefore an extension and specification of the Clinical Structures framework: it does not introduce a fourth structure but tracks the temporal dynamics within the psychotic position, showing how a structural condition can remain clinically latent before it decompensates.

Prepsychosis also touches on the concepts of Alienation and Imaginary. Where the neurotic subject sustains its alienation through the operations of repression and the phallic signifier, the prepsychotic subject has relied on imaginary identifications — borrowed ego-supports, stabilising social roles — to compensate for the absence of symbolic anchorage. The "feeling of coming to the edge of a hole" marks the failure of precisely these imaginary resources, a collapse of Alienation's ordinary scaffolding without the symbolic resources needed to reorganise it. In this way, prepsychosis sits at the intersection of the structural (Foreclosure, Clinical Structures, Name-of-the-Father) and the phenomenological (the felt quality of approaching the void), making it a rare concept in Lacan that bridges formal structural analysis with subjective experience.

The phrase "the edge of a hole" is theoretically loaded because it literalises the structural void left by Foreclosure — the hole is not metaphorical distress but the actual absence of the Name-of-the-Father in the Symbolic — while "the feeling" signals that this void is now registering phenomenologically, indicating that imaginary compensation is failing and the subject stands at the threshold of full decompensation.
