Paraconsistent Political Logic
ELI5
In today's capitalism, the system can handle almost any challenge thrown at it—protests, rebellions, even communist-style governments—because it's already built to survive its own contradictions. The only way to really change it is to stop playing by any of the system's rules entirely, including the rule that says there must be someone left to win.
Definition
Paraconsistent Political Logic names the structural condition of late-capitalist ("postmodern") reality in which the classical logical principle of non-contradiction—that P and non-P cannot both be true simultaneously—is systematically suspended or violated at the level of the social order itself. Drawing on Badiou's three modes of negation (classical, intuitionist, and a proposed fourth), Žižek argues that the existing socio-symbolic order is not merely contradictory in the Hegelian-Marxist sense (where contradiction is a motor of dialectical movement) but is properly paraconsistent: it operates by absorbing and domesticating its own transgression, such that the norm and its violation, the rule and its exception, capitalism and communism, become indistinct. The formula "P is non-P" is not a dialectical tension awaiting sublation but a stabilized, self-reproducing structural feature of the system—its capacity to thrive precisely by incorporating what appears to negate it.
The political consequence is severe: if the existing order is paraconsistent, then neither classical negation (straightforward refusal or opposition) nor intuitionist negation (withholding of affirmation, critique from within) can constitute genuine rupture. Both modes of negation remain legible within and neutralizable by a system that has already made itself identical to its own transgression. The "fourth" logic Žižek proposes—self-negation, the proletariat abolishing itself as a class—functions as the only negation that cannot be reabsorbed, because it does not oppose the system from outside or critique it from within, but dissolves the very subject-position that the system requires. This is structurally analogous to the psychoanalytic logic of the drive's circuit: genuine change is not the attainment of an opposite goal but a transformation in the very structure of the loop. The political demand (symptom) must be interpreted by first formulating the question to which it is an answer, and that question, properly posed, reveals that the answer required is a self-annihilating one.
Place in the corpus
This concept appears once in slavoj-zizek-less-than-nothing-hegel-and-the-shadow-of-dialectical-materialism-v and sits at the intersection of several canonical concepts the corpus elaborates. Its most immediate ancestor is Contradiction: where Contradiction (as synthesized from mcgowan-emancipation and kornbluh-marxist-film) names the motor-force of dialectical movement—the internal tension that drives thought and history forward—Paraconsistent Political Logic marks a mutation of that condition. Here contradiction is no longer a productive antagonism tending toward resolution or sublation; it has become a self-immunizing structural feature of the system, a "flat" P = non-P that the system exploits rather than suffers. This is an extension and darkening of the contradiction concept: paraconsistency is what contradiction looks like when the system has learned to metabolize it.
The concept also engages Fetishistic Disavowal and Negation. Fetishistic disavowal ("I know very well, but nevertheless…") describes the psychic mechanism by which individual subjects sustain ideological functioning despite knowledge of its falsity; Paraconsistent Political Logic names the structural-systemic correlate—not just the subject's split attitude but the order's own constitutive self-contradiction. Dialectics is invoked negatively: classical and intuitionist negation are modes that dialectical thought already commands, but the paraconsistent order has outpaced both. The analogy with the Analysand and the symptom is explicit in Žižek's framing: Occupy Wall Street functions as a symptomatic demand whose underlying question must first be formulated—mirroring the analysand's production of symptoms that require interpretive reformulation before they can be addressed. Finally, the "self-negating" fourth logic resonates with the Drive's structure: satisfaction achieved not by reaching the opposite of the current state but by transforming the loop itself, dissolving the subject-position rather than inverting it.

Less Than Nothing: Hegel and the Shadow of Dialectical Materialism (page unknown)
Is not 'postmodern' capitalism an increasingly paraconsistent system in which, in a variety of modes, P is non-P: the order is its own transgression, capitalism can thrive under communist rule
The phrase "the order is its own transgression" is the theoretically decisive move: it forecloses the classical political logic in which transgression opposes and potentially overcomes an order, asserting instead that the system has incorporated the structure of self-violation as a survival mechanism. The formal notation "P is non-P" anchors this in paraconsistent logic specifically rather than in ordinary political ambivalence, signaling that the problem is not empirical flexibility but a structural mutation of negation itself.
