Lacan is warning against people who turn "not knowing" into a cool philosophy or a brand, when in fact psychoanalysis is really about a very specific, hidden kind of knowledge — the unconscious kind — not about celebrating ignorance.
Definition
Non-Knowledge (le non-savoir) is a term that Lacan invokes in Seminar XIX in order to delimit and contest a rival orientation within the psychoanalytic field — one that would elevate ignorance to a positive theoretical banner. The reference point is Georges Bataille's lecture on non-knowledge, in which not-knowing is valorized as an ecstatic, sovereign experience that escapes the calculative logic of knowledge. Lacan's move is polemical: he acknowledges the term as a real theoretical event but refuses its appropriation as a legitimating slogan for what he regards as an opportunistic misreading of his own work. Specifically, certain institutional actors, prompted by Lacan's introduction of the Saussurean concept of lalangue, launched the Vocabulaire de la Psychanalyse — an encyclopedic project that, in Lacan's view, reduces the linguistic dimension of the unconscious to a dictionary (a closed lexicon) rather than grasping it as grammar, logic, and structural repetition (automaton).
In this context, non-knowledge functions as a polemical foil: it names the gesture of treating the analyst's constitutive non-mastery as a positive epistemic programme, thereby obscuring that psychoanalysis is, for Lacan, fundamentally a matter of savoir — the knowledge that speaks without knowing itself, the symbolic corpus of the unconscious. The analyst's ignorance (ne pas savoir) is better understood, in Lacan's own terms, as a passion structurally tied to the position of objet petit a in the Discourse of the Analyst, not as the suspension or negation of knowledge. Non-knowledge as a flag misnames this structural condition by romanticizing it, and in doing so colludes with the very dictionary-logic (lalangue-as-lexicon) that erases the difference between language-as-structure and lalangue-as-jouissance.

The Discourse of the Analyst, in which objet petit a occupies the agent position and savoir occupies the place of truth, further clarifies why the analyst's non-mastery is not non-knowledge: knowledge appears in the place of truth, structurally present even when invisible from the surface. Non-knowledge, as a concept, thus serves in Seminar XIX as a boundary marker: it names what psychoanalytic practice is not, precisely in order to defend what savoir, lalangue, automaton, and the analyst's discourse properly designate.
