Libidinal Investment
ELI5
Libidinal investment is basically about where your psychic energy — your desire and excitement — gets attached: normally it flows outward toward people and things, but sometimes it pulls back inward (which can produce self-absorption or delusion), or it sticks to a harmful activity in a way that reveals a hidden enjoyment nobody wants to admit to.
Definition
Libidinal investment (or cathexis, following Freud's Besetzung) designates the quantity of psychic energy — libido — that the subject directs toward or concentrates upon a given object, image, or structure. In the Lacanian recasting of Freud's 1914 essay on narcissism (as elaborated in jacques-lacan-seminar-1), the concept becomes structurally decisive: when libido is withdrawn from objects — disinvested — it does not simply dissipate but returns to the ego, constituting narcissism as a secondary, reactive formation. This movement of disinvestment and re-investment is not merely an economic metaphor; it is the very mechanism that distinguishes neurosis from psychosis within the Imaginary/Symbolic/Real framework. In neurosis, the subject retains access to imaginary substitution (the ego as specular, Mirror Stage-constituted formation can receive returning libido), whereas in psychosis the symbolic anchoring required for that substitution is unavailable, and the disinvested libido returns in the Real rather than the Imaginary.
In the second occurrence (neroni-hilary-the-subject-of-torture-psychoanalysis-and-biopolitics-in-televisio), libidinal investment is extended from the clinical register into the political-symptomatic register: it names the enjoyment (jouissance) that is sedimented in a practice — here, torture — and that the perpetrators' rationalizations ("kettle logic") cannot cover over. Here the concept migrates from an intrapsychic economy to a structural reading of social symptoms: the photographs of Abu Ghraib make the torturers' libidinal investment legible precisely because the detainees' testimonies close the gap in the symbolic fiction, exposing the obscene underside that exceeds official justification. Libidinal investment in this register is the mark of jouissance adhering to a scene, the affective surplus that signals where the symbolic order has failed to fully metabolize drive-satisfaction.
Place in the corpus
In jacques-lacan-seminar-1, libidinal investment functions as the economic hinge connecting several canonical concepts. It presupposes the Mirror Stage as the site where the ego — fundamentally an imaginary formation constituted through specular identification — becomes the privileged target for libido withdrawn from objects. This connects directly to the Ego and Narcissism: the ego is not a primary datum but a secondary precipitation of returned libido, and its imaginary consistency depends on the capacity for re-investment that the Mirror Stage makes structurally possible. The concept also articulates with Clinical Structures: the neurosis/psychosis distinction turns on whether returning libido can reinvest the imaginary ego (neurosis) or, lacking that symbolic-imaginary scaffold, erupts elsewhere (psychosis). In this sense, libidinal investment is an extension and specification of the Ego and Identification concepts — it supplies the economic register that complements their structural-imaginary account.
In neroni-hilary-the-subject-of-torture-psychoanalysis-and-biopolitics-in-televisio, the concept migrates from the clinic to political analysis, functioning as a specification of Fantasy and jouissance. The torturers' libidinal investment is legible only when the symbolic fiction fails — a logic parallel to Fantasy's double status as both constituting reality and concealing the Real. Just as Fantasy covers the traumatic Real while being undone by its traversal, the rationalizations covering Abu Ghraib break down when the detainees' accounts complete the picture, revealing the obscene enjoyment underneath. Libidinal investment here names the residue of jouissance that no symbolic account can exhaust — positioning it as a symptom of the Symbolic's structural limit.
Key formulations
The Subject of Torture: Psychoanalysis and Biopolitics in Television and Film (p.64)
this rounding out of the total picture, by including the detainee's stories, makes the torturers' libidinal investment far more apparent
The phrase "rounding out of the total picture" signals that libidinal investment is structurally invisible within the official symbolic frame and only becomes "apparent" when a counter-testimony closes the gap — precisely marking the point where the symbolic fiction breaks down and jouissance shows through; "far more apparent" indicates that the investment was always already there, latent in the scene, rather than introduced by the act of looking.

Theoretical move: Lacan uses Freud's article on narcissism to argue that the distinction between egoistical and sexual libido—and the corresponding distinction between neurosis and psychosis—requires the tripartite framework of Imaginary/Symbolic/Real, with the Mirror Stage grounding the imaginary constitution of the ego, and the neurosis/psychosis structural difference hinging on whether the subject retains access to imaginary substitution when withdrawing from reality.
it is in so far as the libido is disinvested from the object that it returns back on to the ego? There's the problem raised. As a result, Freud is led to conceive of narcissism as a secondary process.
