Concatenation of Signifiers
ELI5
When words or ideas get chained together to make meaning, the person doing the chaining quietly disappears from view — you have to step back for language to step forward. "Concatenation of signifiers" is Lacan's term for this chain structure that creates the speaking subject by simultaneously pushing them out of the picture.
Definition
Concatenation of Signifiers names the structural arrangement by which signifiers are chained together to constitute both the symbolic order and, paradoxically, the subject's constitutive exclusion from that very order. In Seminar 13, Lacan reads Frege's logic of number through Miller's theory of suture to show that the formation of a signifying chain follows the same logic as numerical succession: just as zero functions simultaneously as an excluded, unnamed object and as the integer that names that exclusion (thereby launching the series), the subject is both the cause of the signifying chain and the element that must be expelled from it to keep it running. The "concatenation" is not a neutral stringing-together of terms; it is a structure in which each link presupposes the prior nullification of something — precisely the subject as such. The subject constitutes the chain as a subject (gives it its structure), yet in doing so annihilates his or her own presence within it.
What "subsists" from this nullifying operation is the objet petit a — that remainder or residue left over after the subject is subtracted from the chain. This connects the concept tightly to suture (the logic by which a lack is covered over by the next element in a series) and to the cut (the moment of radical discontinuity that separates one signifier from the next and installs the subject's disappearance). The concatenation of signifiers is therefore not simply a syntactic or semiological matter; it is the very mechanism by which the speaking being is simultaneously produced and abolished as a subject, and by which desire — the desire of the Other, structured as a chain — perpetually exceeds any individual link.

This concept appears in jacques-lacan-seminar-13-1 (p. 32) and sits at the intersection of several canonical Lacanian concepts. It is most directly an elaboration of aphanisis: just as aphanisis names the structural vanishing of the subject produced by the movement of the signifier, concatenation of signifiers names the chain-structure within which that vanishing is formalised. The subject "excludes himself from the scene" precisely because the chain's logic demands his subtraction — this is aphanisis rendered at the level of chain-formation rather than the level of individual signifier-pairs. The concept equally articulates the mechanism of lack: the subject's exclusion from the chain is not a contingent loss but the constitutive void (manque) around which the chain is organised, and the objet petit a is what marks and partially fills that void. The relation to foreclosure is structural rather than clinical: whereas foreclosure is the radical non-inscription of a specific signifier (the Name-of-the-Father) into the chain, concatenation of signifiers describes the general logic by which any chain is constituted through exclusion. Metonymy is also implicated, since the lateral sliding of desire along the chain — each signifier pointing to the next without ever arriving at full presence — is precisely what the concatenation structure makes possible. Finally, the master signifier (S1) can be read as the element within the concatenation that appears to inaugurate it from outside, the quilting point that retroactively organises the chain even as it too is produced by the logic of suture the concatenation instantiates.
Key formulations
Seminar XIII · The Object of Psychoanalysis (alt. translation) (p.32)
the structure of the concatenation. Not only does the subject exclude himself from the scene and from the signifying chain by the very fact that he constitutes it as subject in its structure of concatenation
The theoretical weight falls on the double bind packed into "by the very fact that he constitutes it": the subject's act of constituting the chain is identical to the act of self-exclusion, making production and subtraction a single operation rather than a sequence. The phrase "structure of concatenation" specifies that this is not an accident of a particular chain but a formal, repeatable property of any signifying series — a structural necessity rather than a contingent event.

Theoretical move: By reading Frege through Miller's logic of the signifier, Lacan argues that the structure of numerical concatenation (zero as both excluded object and naming integer) mirrors the subject's constitutive exclusion from the signifying chain, and that the objet petit a is precisely what "subsists" from this nullifying operation, linking suture and cut to the subject–signifier relation.
