Bedeutung

In Seminar XII, Lacan mobilizes Frege's technical distinction between Sinn (sense) and Bedeutung (reference/meaning) to locate a structural problem at the heart of both logic and psychoanalytic experience. For Frege, Bedeutung names the referential dimension of a sign — what the sign actually picks out in the world, as opposed to the sense or mode of presentation through which it does so. Lacan seizes on this distinction not as a piece of philosophy of language but as a diagnostic: when logic reduces Bedeutung to a binary function of truth and falsity (a proposition either refers to the True or the False), it symptomatically reveals the exclusion of the Real from the formal field. The dimension of Bedeutung is, for Lacan, precisely the "sensitive point of truth" — not truth as a stable value, but truth as the question mark that language cannot suppress, the remainder that formal reduction cannot absorb.

This concept thus names the axis along which reference, the Real, and the subject's division intersect. Whereas signification (the S/s relation) operates within the Symbolic chain, Bedeutung marks the point where the chain strains toward something outside itself — toward a referent or anchor that it cannot fully secure. Lacan's claim is that the analyst, structurally excluded from the Real by the very operation of analytic technique, must nevertheless organize a new logic around this excluded dimension. The three irreducible terms Lacan proposes — knowledge, subject, and sex — are required precisely because no binary logical apparatus (true/false, sense/reference in the Fregean mode) can situate them without remainder. Bedeutung is the name for that remainder.

This concept appears once, in jacques-lacan-seminar-12-1 (p. 291), at a moment when Lacan is constructing the theoretical architecture that will distinguish psychoanalytic logic from formal logic. Its position is pivotal: it bridges the cross-referenced canonicals in a specific way. Signification (the S/s process) operates inside the Symbolic chain and produces meaning retroactively through quilting points; Bedeutung, by contrast, designates the referential or Real dimension that signification reaches toward but cannot close. Where signification is always already symbolic, Bedeutung marks the point of contact — and structural failure of contact — with the Real. This aligns with the canonical account of the Real as "what resists symbolisation absolutely" and what "does not cease not to be written": Bedeutung is the name logic gives to the domain the Symbolic cannot absorb, and which returns as truth's "question mark."

The concept also ties directly to Knowledge (savoir) and the Splitting of the Subject. If savoir is constitutively incomplete and non-closeable, and if the split subject ($) is produced by the forced choice of the vel of alienation — always losing something on either side — then Bedeutung is the formal-logical index of that loss. Frege's reduction of reference to truth/falsity is, for Lacan, a symptomatic foreclosure of precisely the non-closeable remainder that the split subject embodies. By naming this remainder Bedeutung and placing it alongside knowledge, subject, and sex as one of three irreducible organizing terms, Lacan positions it as a specification — and a critique — of what logic represses: the Real dimension of reference that psychoanalysis must instead theorize directly.

the theory which is called what distinguishes the sign from the Bedeutung, from meaning, in Frege... the dimension of Bedeutung, the dimension also of what is for us the question mark, the sensitive point of truth.

The phrase "sensitive point of truth" is theoretically loaded because it refuses Frege's own resolution: where Frege assigned Bedeutung a stable logical value (the True or the False), Lacan transforms it into a "question mark" — an open, unresolved pressure-point. The co-presence of "Bedeutung," "question mark," and "truth" in a single breath condenses the argument that reference, far from being a solved logical problem, is the very site where the Real irrupts into the symbolic and where psychoanalysis parts ways with formal logic.
