Autism à deux

Autism à deux is Lacan's ironic, self-critical formulation, coined in Seminar 24, for the structural predicament of the psychoanalytic encounter: if the analyst reads only the sinthome (the symptom as formal letter, not as message bearing recoverable truth), and if "varité"—a portmanteau collapsing vérité (truth) into variété (variety/variation)—is the only approximation of truth available, then analyst and analysand are each enclosed in their own irreducible singularity of jouissance. The session would then be two solitudes meeting under the sign of communication that never quite occurs—a dyadic enclosure structurally analogous to autism, where no shared code guarantees passage between interiors.

What redeems this structural closure and prevents the analytic couple from collapsing into pure mutual opacity is lalangue—the mother tongue understood not as a linguistic system (langue) but as a pre-structural, obscene, sonorous substrate of shared jouissance and collective fantasy. Lalangue is a "common affair": it is not privately owned by either participant but is the anonymous, communal medium in which both analyst and analysand are already bathed before any exchange begins. It therefore functions as the minimal guarantee of a forced opening between the two closed circuits—not a transparent channel of meaning but a shared resonance that breaks the hermetic seal of each party's singular symptom.

In jacques-lacan-seminar-24, "autism à deux" appears as a late-Lacanian moment of theoretical self-accounting—Lacan turning the apparatus back on itself to ask what actually happens in the clinic given his own mature positions. It presupposes and pressures the concept of lalangue: if lalangue is the common affair that forces open the autistic enclosure, the concept implicitly restates why it cannot be reduced to the Saussurean langue of shared code. It also depends on the redefinition of the analysand not as a patient receiving interpretations but as the producer of a singular discourse; the "autism" lies precisely in the fact that each party's unconscious is structured around an irreducible singularity of jouissance that no metalanguage can neutralise.

The concept also obliquely repositions the four discourses: the Discourse of the Analyst places objet a in the commanding position so that the analysand's division ($) emerges as product—but "autism à deux" names the risk that this formal arrangement is undercut by the incommensurability of symptom-jouissance on each side. The ironic use of "autism" here is not clinical but structural, resonating with the hysteria framing in which desire circulates in a loop that resists satisfaction; but where hysteria is the engine of the analytic encounter (the hysteric forces knowledge from the master), "autism à deux" names its threat of implosion. Lalangue—phonemic, bodily, communal—is the irreducible remainder that prevents the four-discourse matrix from becoming a closed game between two singularities.
