Zero as Logical Contradiction

Zero as Logical Contradiction is the concept, drawn from Frege's Grundlagen der Arithmetik as reconstructed by Duroux in Seminar XII, that grounds the number zero not in empirical absence or psychological experience but in a purely logical, self-defeating concept: the concept "non-identical to itself." Because nothing can coherently satisfy this predicate — nothing can fail to be identical to itself and still be an object — the extension of this concept is empty. Zero is thus not a name for nothingness in the intuitive or phenomenological sense; it is the cardinality assigned to a concept whose inner logical structure is contradictory, a concept that necessarily has no object falling under it.

The theoretical weight of this move is that it grounds the origin of number — and through the successor operation, the entire sequence of natural numbers — in an internal logical contradiction rather than in any act of counting, collecting, or psychological synthesis. This is Frege's anti-psychologist wager: arithmetic is not derived from experience but from the pure structure of logical relations between concepts and objects. The contradictory concept "non-identical to itself" performs a double function: it makes zero derivable a priori (any concept that contradicts itself will have zero objects falling under it), and it installs negation — self-negation, the failure of identity — as the absolute starting point of the numerical series. Duroux's presentation frames this as the philosophical-logical basis from which Miller will subsequently develop a Lacanian account of the subject as constituted by lack and by its own structural self-division.

It thereby provides the formal anchor for the concept of Lack: as the canonical synthesis of Lack notes, "nothing in the real is missing; a lack can only be introduced when there are signs and symbols" — and here, zero is exactly that: a lack introduced by symbolic-logical structure (the contradictory concept), not by any real absence. The relation to Splitting of the Subject and to the Subject more broadly is equally direct: just as the subject is constituted at the point of its own self-division and non-identity, zero is constituted at the point of a concept's internal non-identity. Foreclosure, by contrast, offers a structural parallel at the clinical level — the primordial signifier that is never inscribed leaves a hole in the symbolic analogous to the empty extension of the contradictory concept, though Zero as Logical Contradiction operates at the formal-logical rather than the clinical register.
