Writing Function
ELI5
Writing isn't just a way of recording speech — it secretly holds up how whole societies are organised, letting certain power structures and habits of enjoyment keep going for a very long time, even when no one can quite explain why.
Definition
The "writing function" (la fonction de l'écriture) names the structural role that writing plays as an indirect but constitutive support for language and, through language, for a specific form of social organisation. In Seminar XVIII, Lacan develops this notion through a reading of a Mencian formula, arguing that writing is not a mere transcription or representation of speech but the very condition that allows certain discursive structures — and, with them, certain modes of jouissance — to stabilise and persist over time. Writing, on this account, operates as the material infrastructure beneath the ideological coherence of a social bond: it is not what a discourse says, but what underwrites the possibility of that saying having effects at all. Crucially, this function is "indirect": writing does not produce meaning in the logico-positivist sense of graspable, verifiable sense, but rather insists as a cause — specifically, as the cause of surplus-jouissance (the li/profit of the Mencian formula) that circulates in any discourse.
This concept also situates writing against demands for transparency and immediate meaningfulness. Lacan's polemic against logical-positivism insists that the function of writing is not to render something graspable but to hold open a gap — the gap that makes discourse productive of remainder, of surplus, of something in excess of any stated intention. The writing function is therefore not identical to the letter in its purely material sense, nor to the signifier in its purely differential sense, but designates the operative role that the material inscription (letter, text, formula) plays in sustaining the cause-structure of discourse — the place where the Real of jouissance is, indirectly, anchored to the Symbolic chain.
Place in the corpus
The writing function appears in jacques-lacan-seminar-18 at a pivotal moment in Lacan's argument about the relationship between language and writing. It extends and specifies several of the corpus's canonical concepts. In relation to Language, it inverts the ordinary hierarchy: rather than writing being secondary to speech, the writing function names what language depends on for its social durability and causal efficacy. In relation to the Letter, the writing function is a more structural or sociological deployment of what the letter concept maps materially and topologically: if the letter is the material support that concrete discourse borrows from language, the writing function names what that support does — namely, sustain a social bond and allow surplus-jouissance to circulate as cause rather than as transparent meaning.
The concept also connects directly to the discourse algebra. Writing's "decisive role in supporting… a type of social structure" aligns it with the logic of both the Discourse of the Master and the Discourse of the Analyst: in both, there is a structural cause (S1 or objet petit a) whose operation is not made explicit to those it governs, just as the writing function works indirectly. The Mencian formula's equation of the effects of discourse with surplus-jouissance (li/profit) maps onto the Surplus-jouissance position in the matheme — the remainder produced when the master's S1 puts S2 (Knowledge) to work — suggesting that writing is precisely what holds that remainder in place across historical time. Finally, in relation to Signification, writing's function is defined against signification as positivist demand: it refuses to be graspable meaning and instead operates as formal cause, aligning with Lacan's broader critique that neither truth nor the unconscious can be cashed out in terms of denotative content.
Key formulations
Seminar XVIII · On a Discourse That Might Not Be a Semblance (p.56)
what is the function of writing (l'écriture)... writing has played a quite decisive role in supporting something... a type of social structure that was sustained for a very long time
The phrase "decisive role in supporting" is theoretically loaded because it assigns to writing not a representational but a causal-structural function — writing supports (holds up, underwrites) a social structure rather than merely transcribing or expressing it. The further qualification "sustained for a very long time" implies that this supporting role is what gives a discourse its historical durability, aligning the writing function with the logic of cause (surplus-jouissance) rather than with the moment-to-moment transmission of meaning.

**Seminar 4: Wednesday 17 February 1971**
Theoretical move: Lacan uses a close reading of a Mencian formula on language and nature to argue that what emerges from the effects of discourse is nothing other than the function of cause insofar as it is surplus-jouissance (li/profit), while also positioning writing as the indirect but constitutive reference for language, against logical-positivist demands for graspable meaning.
