Wortvorstellung

Wortvorstellung — literally "word-presentation" or "word-representation" — is a Freudian technical term that Lacan invokes in Seminar XVIII to distinguish the material of the unconscious from the mere transcription of spoken language. In Freud's metapsychological writings (especially "The Unconscious," 1915), the Wortvorstellung is the verbal presentation that, linked to the Sachvorstellung (thing-presentation), constitutes the preconscious/conscious system, while the unconscious proper contains only thing-presentations. Lacan's invocation of the term here is pointed: by reminding his audience that Freud defined writing as "the representation of words" — the Wortvorstellung — he leverages Freud's own framework to argue that the dimension of writing is not reducible to phonemic speech. Writing, in this frame, is what gives the word-presentation its material, literal support: it is not the representation of sounds but the representation of words as such, i.e., of signifying units already structured symbolically.

This allows Lacan to sharpen the distinction between the Letter and the Signifier that is central to Seminar XVIII's argument. If Freudian unconscious formation operates through word-presentations — through the material body of the word rather than its semantic content — then the unconscious is already a kind of writing, not mere vocalization. Wortvorstellung thus anchors the claim that the unconscious is structured like a language in which the letter (rather than the phoneme or the spoken word) is the operative unit. The "giggling" Lacan notes among his audience signals the resistance to taking this Freudian technical distinction seriously: it is the repression, one might say, of what Freud already wrote about writing.

Within jacques-lacan-seminar-18, the invocation of Wortvorstellung occurs at a hinge point in Lacan's argument about formalization. He is distinguishing writing — as the material support that makes scientific and psychoanalytic formalization possible (including the matheme and the inscription of the phallus as that which "writes" the impossibility of the sexual relationship) — from speech as mere vocalization. The Wortvorstellung anchors this by showing that Freud himself already located the relevant psychic material at the level of the word as a written-type unit, not at the level of the living voice. This situates the concept in direct relation to the Letter (as defined canonically): both concern the material, inscribed dimension of the signifier that the unconscious exploits, and both stand opposed to an imaginary or phonocentric conception of language. Wortvorstellung is effectively a Freudian precursor-name for what Lacan will call the letter in the Real — the material trace that is more primordial than spoken meaning.

The concept also touches on Condensation: Freud's word-presentations are precisely the units upon which condensation operates in dream-work and jokes, over-determining single verbal nodes with multiple associative chains. Lacan's move is to show that this Freudian mechanism already presupposes a written, not merely spoken, substrate — consonant with the broader argument in Seminar XVIII that Language is constitutively unable to write the sexual relationship, and that it is only through the letter-as-writing (not through phonemic language) that the Real can be approached at all, however asymptotically, via formalization and the matheme.

The phrase "writing is the representation of words" is theoretically loaded because it inverts the common assumption that writing merely transcribes speech: by equating writing with the Wortvorstellung — the word-presentation that Freud located at the boundary of unconscious and preconscious — Lacan implies that the material support of the word is already a form of inscription, and the dismissive "everyone giggles" marks this as precisely the repressed insight that psychoanalysis (and his audience) resists taking seriously.
