Vorstellung

Vorstellung, in the context of Lacan's reading of Freud's Entwurf and Letter 52 (Seminar VII, p. 57), designates the unit of psychic representation — the building block of what Freud calls the Vorstellungsrepräsentanz, the chain of signifying delegates through which the subject's mental life is organized. Crucially, Vorstellungen do not give the subject unmediated access to reality or to its primordial object of satisfaction; rather, they constitute a relay system — a movement from representation to representation — that forever circles around Das Ding without ever arriving at it. Das Ding, the alien, irreducible kernel of the Nebenmensch, is precisely what the signifying chain of Vorstellungen cannot absorb or assimilate. The entire architecture of psychic life is therefore defined by this structural gap: the subject moves along a chain of representations, propelled by the pleasure principle, but the organizing center of that movement — the Thing — escapes every representational capture.

This account locates Vorstellung at the intersection of the signifying structure and the subject's fundamental orientation toward the lost object. The movement "from Vorstellung to Vorstellung" is not aimless but is drawn by the gravitational pull of Das Ding — a void that the chain of representations approaches only asymptotically. The interposition of this representational relay between perception and consciousness is, for Lacan following Freud, precisely what constitutes the unconscious as such: the unconscious is not a reservoir of images but the structured movement of representations around an unrepresentable core.

The concept thus belongs to Lacan's foundational metapsychological argument about how the signifying chain constitutes the unconscious: representations do not represent the Thing — they represent its absence, endlessly deferring to one another in a movement structured by the pleasure principle's search for a satisfaction that is structurally unfindable (cross-referencing the Lost Object and Desire). The chain of Vorstellungen is precisely what interposes between perception and consciousness, making the unconscious a semiotic relay system rather than an image archive (cross-referencing Conscious and Language).

As a concept, Vorstellung functions as a specification — almost a micro-mechanical account — of what the canonical concepts describe at a higher level of abstraction. Where Desire names the structural unfulfillability and the Lost Object names the constitutive void, Vorstellung names the concrete moment-to-moment representational movement through which that structure is lived out. It sits just below the level of the Symbolic (Language, the signifying chain) and just above the level of the real gap (Das Ding), occupying the mediating position of the Preconscious and the Pleasure Principle: the subject's secondary-process attempts to reach satisfaction always proceed through this chain of representations, governed by the pleasure principle's regulation, and always fall short of the Thing. The term does not recur elsewhere in the corpus as a coined concept because, in later Lacan, its function is progressively absorbed by the broader concept of the signifier and eventually by lalangue — but in Seminar VII it carries the full Freudian specificity of a representational unit in the metapsychological apparatus.

The phrase "tiny attempts" is theoretically charged: it frames the entire movement of human psychic life — and civilization itself ("the human world") — as a series of small, partial, never-quite-sufficient steps, capturing the constitutive inadequacy of the representational relay. The repetitive structure "from Vorstellung to Vorstellung" enacts formally what it describes: a chain that displaces rather than arrives, indexing the metonymic movement of desire around the absent Thing.
