Universalism here means standing together with people across all differences — not by pretending those differences don't exist or by romanticizing them, but by recognizing that we're all part of the same unequal system and fighting it together.
Definition
Universalism, as deployed in this passage, is not a liberal-humanist appeal to a pre-given human essence shared by all, nor a naïve erasure of cultural difference.
