Une-bévue

Une-bévue is Lacan's late neologism, introduced in Seminar XXIV, proposed as a superior French translation of the German Unbewusst (the unconscious). The term performs a homophonic substitution: une-bévue means literally "a blunder" or "a mis-step," but heard aloud it echoes Unbewusst (Un-be-wusst), collapsing the unconscious into the structure of error itself. This is not a casual wordplay but a theoretically precise intervention: where the standard French translation l'inconscient equivocates with mere "unconsciousness" (a lack of awareness), une-bévue captures something structurally generative — the blunder, the slip, the mis-hearing — that is the unconscious's positive mode of operation. The unconscious does not simply hide beneath consciousness; it erupts as error, as the unexpected word, as what slips out despite intention.

The second, topological dimension of the concept is equally essential. Lacan grounds une-bévue in the geometry of the torus and the double Möbius strip: when a torus is cut twice, it produces a double Möbius surface whose front and back are structurally indistinguishable from any fixed vantage point. This indeterminacy — the impossibility of deciding which face is which — is the formal condition of possibility for the une-bévue. The blunder is not contingent but structural: it arises wherever a surface has no stable orientation, wherever inside and outside cannot be finally separated. Moreover, Lacan identifies the une-bévue with the signifier itself and calls it a "false whole" — it is what circulates in exchange without being equal to the unit it purports to represent, marking the constitutive non-equivalence at the heart of signifying exchange.

The concept belongs exclusively to jacques-lacan-seminar-24 and sits at the intersection of several late-Lacanian concerns. Its most direct cross-reference is to the Unconscious: rather than extending or supplementing the standard account, une-bévue performs a radical re-nomination, suggesting that the Freudian Unbewusst is best understood not as a depth-psychological reservoir but as the structural errancy of the signifier — a move that is itself an instance of Lalangue at work, since the discovery is available only through the sonic accident of French/German homophony. The concept thus exemplifies lalangue's claim that equivocations specific to a particular tongue are not noise but theoretical revelation.

The topological grounding ties une-bévue directly to the cross-references of Topology and the Möbius Strip: the double Möbius strip produced by cutting a torus is precisely the surface on which orientation (and hence the distinction between conscious and unconscious, inside and outside) becomes undecidable, making the blunder not a psychological failure but a geometrical necessity. This connects further to the Real — the indeterminacy of the surface's orientation is a figure for what "does not cease not to be written," the impossible point that resists stable symbolization. Finally, by calling the une-bévue a "false whole" whose "type is the signifier," Lacan links it to the Signifier and implicitly to Knowledge: une-bévue is the form in which unconscious knowledge (savoir qui ne se sait pas) enters circulation — not as mastery but as structural mis-step, the irreducible remainder that prevents any signifying exchange from closing into a complete, self-identical whole.
