Unconditioned
ELI5
The Unconditioned is what reason is always searching for — the final, rock-bottom explanation that doesn't itself need explaining. But every time reason tries to grab hold of it, it runs into an impossible contradiction, because the world never actually hands us a "the buck stops here" answer.
Definition
In Kant's Critique of Pure Reason, the Unconditioned names the ultimate terminus that Reason (Vernunft) compulsively seeks but can never legitimately claim to possess within the bounds of possible experience. Reason's defining operation is the regressive synthesis of conditions: given any conditioned cognition (an event caused by a prior event, a substance sustained by a prior substance), Reason demands the complete series of conditions — the totality that would finally ground the conditioned in something that is itself unconditioned, requiring no further condition. The Unconditioned is thus not one object among others but the structural horizon that Reason is constitutively driven toward. Kant derives from the four relational categories of the Understanding (inherence, causality, community, and modality) four corresponding Cosmological Ideas — the four faces of the Unconditioned as applied to the world-whole — which are the systematic sources of the antinomies of pure reason.
The critical force of the concept lies precisely in its generative impossibility. When Reason attempts to posit the Unconditioned as an actual object (rather than a regulative idea), it is forced into antinomy: the Unconditioned must be either an absolutely first member of the series (a beginning, a first cause, a simple substance) or an infinite regression with no first member — both positions are demonstrably contradictory. The Unconditioned is therefore never given in experience and cannot be constitutively known; it functions as an organizing demand of Reason itself, the pressure that keeps synthesis moving while also producing the paralogisms, antinomies, and the Ideal of pure reason. It is, structurally, the place where Reason's own inner necessity tips over into self-produced contradiction.
Place in the corpus
Within kant-immanuel-critique-of-pure-reason, the Unconditioned is a load-bearing structural concept rather than a marginal coinage. It is the object-correlate of Reason as such: where the cross-referenced concept Reason is defined as the faculty that seeks unconditioned totality, the Unconditioned is precisely what that seeking is directed toward. The two concepts are co-constitutive: Reason is the faculty because it seeks the Unconditioned; the Unconditioned is the horizon because Reason's syllogistic pressure generates it. The cross-referenced concept Transcendental Idea names the formal vehicle through which the Unconditioned is represented for each category; Synthesis names the regressive operation by which Reason ascends the series of conditions; Totality names the modal character that the Unconditioned would have if attained; and Infinite marks the first horn of the antinomy — the endless regress that results when no finite first member is admitted. The Unconditioned is thus the conceptual knot at which all these cross-references converge.
In the broader Lacanian-inflected corpus, the Unconditioned functions as a historical precursor to several key structures. The cross-referenced definition of Contradiction notes that Lacan maps his formulas of sexuation onto Kant's mathematical and dynamical antinomies (copjec-read-my-desire, zizek-sex-failed-absolute): this mapping presupposes the antinomial structure that the Unconditioned generates. Similarly, the definition of Infinite explicitly names the "Kantian antinomial infinite as the structural horizon of pure reason" — the bad infinite (endless regress) as one horn of the antinomy around the Unconditioned. From a Lacanian perspective, the Unconditioned occupies a position structurally analogous to the Real: it is what Reason demands but cannot symbolize without contradiction, the constitutive impossibility that drives the system while remaining outside it. The Unconditioned is thus not adopted by Lacanian theory but is rather the Kantian name for the place that Lacanian theory will subsequently re-theorize as objet a, the Thing (das Ding), or the Real.
Key formulations
Critique of Pure Reason (page unknown)
it is properly the unconditioned alone that reason seeks in this serially and regressively conducted synthesis of conditions
The phrase "properly the unconditioned alone" is theoretically loaded because it isolates the Unconditioned as Reason's sole, constitutive object — not one goal among others but the exclusive telos that defines Reason as a faculty. The qualifier "serially and regressively conducted synthesis" specifies the mechanism: Reason does not leap to the Unconditioned directly but is driven there by the internal logic of ascending through a series of conditions, making the antinomial impasse not an accident but a structural necessity built into Reason's own procedure.

THE CRITIQUE OF PURE REASON > BOOK I. > SECTION I. System of Cosmological Ideas.
Theoretical move: Kant constructs a systematic table of four Cosmological Ideas by elevating the relational categories to the unconditioned through regressive synthesis, arguing that reason necessarily demands absolute totality on the side of conditions (not consequences), thereby generating the antinomies of pure reason around the unconditioned as either an infinite series or a first member.
