Synthesis (Kantian)

Kantian Synthesis names the fundamental operation of the pure understanding by which a manifold of intuitions — the raw, uncoordinated data delivered by sensibility through the pure forms of space and time — is actively bound together into a unified, determinate representation. For Kant, this is not a passive reception but a spontaneous act: the understanding "runs through and holds together" the successive elements of a manifold, producing the consciousness of their synthetical unity. The result is not mere aggregation but the constitution of extensive quantities — magnitudes in which the parts are represented as generating the whole — which is precisely what the Axioms of Intuition establish as the a priori principle governing all phenomena. This means that geometry and arithmetic are not externally imposed on experience; they are internally conditions of the possibility of experience itself.

The concept is therefore doubly grounded: in the pure intuitions of space and time (which supply the form of sensible reception) and in the categories of the understanding (which supply the rule of unification). Synthesis is the hinge between the two. Without it, intuitions remain "blind" and concepts remain "empty." As an operation of composition of the homogeneous — parts that are qualitatively alike and so can be summed — synthesis underwrites the applicability of mathematics to empirical objects, making possible a science of nature.
