Symbolic Equation Girl=Phallus

The Symbolic Equation Girl=Phallus designates a structural position within the phallic economy wherein a subject (or object) does not have the phallus but is identified with it as a signifier of desire. Lacan introduces this formula in Seminar 4 as the symmetrical complement to fetishism: where the fetishist installs an object as a veil over castration — over the lack in the Other — the transvestite or the "girl" occupies the phallic position directly, becoming the missing object rather than substituting for it. The equation is explicitly aligned with Freud's well-known series faeces = child = penis, which charts a chain of symbolic equivalences in which one term can stand in for another across different developmental moments. What is decisive for Lacan is that this is a symbolic, not imaginary, equation: it is not a matter of resemblance or perceptual substitution, but of structural placement within the signifying economy of lack and its supplements.

The theoretical force of the equation lies in its demonstration that the phallic object is never simply present or absent, but is always a function of the subject's position vis-à-vis lack. Whether the subject brings, gives, is, or desires the phallus, each position is structurally distinct — yet all are organized around the same irreducible absence. Crucially, the equation shows that the imaginary "almightiness" of the Other (its apparent completeness and omnipotence) is itself sustained by, and grounded in, this constitutive lack rather than in any positive plenitude. The girl does not supplement the Other's completeness; she signifies the very void around which desire circulates.

This concept appears in jacques-lacan-seminar-4 at a moment when Lacan is systematically mapping the different structural positions subjects and objects can occupy in relation to the phallus as signifier of lack. It sits at the intersection of several cross-referenced canonical concepts. Most directly, it extends the logic of the Fetish: where the fetish veils castration by installing a positive object as a witness to lack, the Girl=Phallus equation names a position in which the subject embodies the phallic signifier rather than substituting an object for it — a complementary but structurally distinct operation. Both, however, are organized around the same constitutive Lack in the field of the Other, and both reveal that the Other's apparent almightiness is a fiction sustained by that very lack rather than by genuine completeness.

The equation also resonates with Identification (specifically its imaginary-to-symbolic axis): being the phallus is a mode of identification with what the Other desires — not with a trait or image of the Other, but with the object of the Other's want. This connects it to Desire (the formula "the desire of man is the desire of the Other") and to Fantasy, insofar as occupying the phallic position is precisely the arrangement through which the subject manages the Other's desire and keeps it in motion. The Gaze and the Scopic dimension are also implicated: Lacan's discussion frames transvestism and the garment explicitly within the scopic relation, where the visible surface (clothing, the feminine image) functions around what it conceals rather than what it displays — a logic parallel to the gaze as objet a, the stain that organizes the visual field around an absence.
