Surplussense

Surplussense names the unexpected, self-generated meaning — or more precisely, over-meaning — that emerges from within a situation of failure, nonsense, or breakdown. In Zupančič's argument (the-odd-one-in-on-comedy-alenka-zupancic, p.131), it designates the comic surplus that arises not despite but through a constitutive crack or non-coincidence internal to life itself. Rather than meaning emerging from successful communication or transparent signification, surplussense appears at the very site of semiotic or vital failure — a kind of Mehrwert of sense analogous to Marx's surplus-value, generated precisely from the excess left over when the circuit of meaning "fails to close." The concept is explicitly opposed to Bergsonian dualism: the comic is not a collision between living flexibility and dead mechanism, but the result of life's internal self-referential fold — its inability to coincide with itself — producing, in the gap between the two sides of the One, a meaning that was not intended, not planned, not derived from any prior content.

This makes surplussense a strictly dialectical category: sense is not added to nonsense from outside, but nonsense itself, in its failure, generates sense as its own immanent by-product. The word "miraculous" (placed in scare-quotes) is theoretically loaded because it flags the apparent impossibility — the logical scandal — of meaning arising from its own negation; it is "miraculous" precisely because it violates the expectation that nonsense produces nothing.
