Surplus Abstraction

Surplus abstraction names the redoubled, self-referential movement by which a capitalist political economy does not merely strip the worker of particular qualities but abstracts from abstraction itself — treating the act of reduction as if it were a natural, given essence rather than a constructed operation. The concept is coined in slavoj-zizek-frank-ruda-agon-hamza-reading-marx-polity-pres-2018 to explain why the reduction of the worker to an animal is not a simple downgrading but a hypostatization: by abstracting a second time from the very act of first abstraction, capital produces an ideological-imaginary entity — the Untier ("un-animal") — that is neither purely human nor purely animal but a new, essentialized genus. "Surplus" here echoes the Marxian structure of surplus-value: just as surplus-value is extracted by adding an additional, unpaid loop of labor onto necessary labor, surplus abstraction is produced by adding an additional, hidden loop of abstraction onto the first visible one.
