Sub-logic

Sub-logic is a term coined by Lacan in Seminar XIV to designate the specific logical register appropriate to the psychoanalytic investigation of sublimation, satisfaction, and the act as signifier — a register that is not below logic in the sense of being pre-rational or irrational, but that operates beneath (sub-) the level of formal logic precisely because it must accommodate the structural peculiarities of the drive, repetition, and jouissance that standard logic cannot capture without distortion. Lacan positions sublimation as the fourth term in a structural table alongside repetition, passage à l'acte, and acting-out, and it is in theorizing sublimation — especially its Freudian definition via zielgehemmt (aim-inhibited) and the satisfaction (Befriedigung) that underwrites repetition — that the inadequacy of ordinary logical and energetic frameworks (specifically Hartmann's ego-psychological energetics) becomes visible. Sub-logic is therefore the inaugurating gesture of a discipline rigorous enough to think satisfaction without reducing it to the pleasure principle's economy.

The concept implies that the act — and paradigmatically the sexual act — is a signifier, and that its repetition traces the oedipal scene. What is required to think this properly is a logical apparatus that descends beneath the conceptual level at which classical logic and ego-psychological metapsychology operate: one that can hold the co-presence of repetition and satisfaction, of signifier and jouissance, without collapsing them into an energetic or adaptive framework. Sub-logic is thus Lacan's name for the methodological ambition of Seminar XIV itself — an attempt to found a formal discipline adequate to the Real of the drive and the act.

Sub-logic appears in jacques-lacan-seminar-14-1 (p. 127) as a self-reflexive methodological declaration: Lacan is naming the very type of inquiry Seminar XIV is attempting to inaugurate. It is positioned in direct tension with Ego Psychology (cross-ref'd): Hartmann's energetics framework is explicitly identified as a distortion that inverts the true problem of satisfaction, and sub-logic is the counter-move — the logical discipline that avoids that inversion by taking seriously the structural, signifier-anchored nature of the act and its satisfaction. Where ego psychology operates at the level of imaginary adaptation and measurable energy, sub-logic descends to the level where Drive, Repetition, and Jouissance intersect in the Real.

The concept also extends and sharpens several other cross-ref'd canonicals. It is the methodological precondition for thinking the Death Drive and the Drive properly: both require a logical apparatus that can hold the loop of the drive's circuit (where satisfaction is in the going-around, not the goal) without translating it into teleological or energetic terms. Similarly, sub-logic is the framework within which Jouissance — structurally excluded from the Symbolic and irreducible to pleasure — can be theorized without being domesticated. The connection to Passage à l'acte and Repetition (also cross-ref'd) is equally structural: sub-logic is needed precisely because these phenomena — the act as signifier, the compulsion to repeat the oedipal scene — resist capture by formal logic alone and demand a register of thought that is below yet continuous with logic's own requirements.

The phrase "requirements of logic" signals that sub-logic is not a rejection of logical rigor but a deepening of it — the prefix "sub-" marks a descent to a level beneath where standard logic operates, not an abandonment of it. The performative declaration "we are trying to inaugurate" makes the quote a founding gesture: Lacan is not describing an existing discipline but naming, in real time, the methodological ambition of the seminar itself, which aligns with his broader project of formalizing a logic of the drive and the act adequate to the Real.
