Structuring Antagonism
ELI5
Society has a deep, unfixable crack running through it — a tension that can never be fully resolved — and ideology is the plaster that keeps us from noticing it's there. "Structuring Antagonism" is just the name for that crack.
Definition
Structuring Antagonism names the irreducible, non-symbolizable conflict or contradiction that lies at the foundation of the social order and of subjectivity itself — the Real kernel that ideology, fantasy, and disavowal collectively work to veil. In Žižek's post-Lacanian framework, antagonism is not one conflict among others that could in principle be resolved; it is constitutive. Society does not contain an antagonism the way a jar contains a fly; rather, antagonism is the very condition of impossibility that prevents "society" from achieving full closure or self-identity. What ideology does, on this account, is not merely misrepresent reality but actively manage the subject's relationship to this founding impossibility — offering fantasmatic scenarios (class harmony, national unity, commodity fetishism) that allow the subject to navigate social reality without encountering the void that structures it. The qualifier "structuring" is decisive: antagonism is not a surface disruption but the negative core that organizes the entire field, the way the Lacanian Real is not the opposite of the Symbolic but its non-dialectizable ground.
The concept connects directly to the psychic mechanism of repression and to fetishistic disavowal: ideology enables subjects to function under the formula "I know very well that the social order is contradictory and unjust, but nevertheless I act as if it is coherent and legitimate." The ideological operation analyzed through the They Live allegory in the source (todd-mcgowan-dominik-finkelde-eds-zizek-responds-bloomsbury-publishing-2022) is precisely this: putting on the special glasses (performing ideology critique) is not merely an epistemic act but a psychic-existential choice, because what one then sees is not a corrected picture of reality but the structuring antagonism that one's entire libidinal economy has been organized to avoid. Genuine critique therefore demands not a cognitive update but something closer to what the source calls a psychic revolution — a willingness to forfeit the fantasmatic satisfaction that the avoidance of antagonism provides.
Place in the corpus
Within todd-mcgowan-dominik-finkelde-eds-zizek-responds-bloomsbury-publishing-2022, Structuring Antagonism occupies the hinge between the psychoanalytic and the political-theoretical registers of Žižek's project. It is the concept that explains why ideology cannot be defeated by enlightenment or demystification alone: if ideology's function is to prevent the encounter with antagonism, then simply gaining correct knowledge leaves the libidinal investment in avoidance untouched. This places the concept in direct dialogue with Fetishistic Disavowal — the "I know very well, but nevertheless" structure — whose very persistence depends on there being something sufficiently threatening (the antagonism) to disavow in the first place. It equally depends on Repression and the Death Drive: the psyche's capacity for self-defeating repetition is precisely what ideology harnesses, ensuring that subjects repeatedly reproduce the social conditions that harm them rather than confronting the impossibility at those conditions' core.
The concept extends the canonical account of Ideology by specifying what ideology's fantasmatic supplement is a supplement to: not simply "false consciousness" or a distortion of a pre-given reality, but the constitutive void that makes total social self-identity impossible. It thereby links Ideology to the Point de capiton — the master-signifier that quilts a field of floating signifiers into apparent coherence — by clarifying that capitonnage is always a temporary suture over an antagonism that cannot be finally resolved. The relationship to Desire and Ethics of Psychoanalysis is equally structural: if the Ethics of Psychoanalysis demands fidelity to one's desire and prohibits "giving ground relative to one's desire," then Structuring Antagonism names what ideological retreat from that ethics avoids — the Real of social contradiction that mirrors the Real of the subject's own constitutive lack.
Key formulations
Žižek Responds! (p.153)
ideology enables us to avoid confronting the structuring antagonism
The phrase is theoretically loaded on both sides of its verb: "ideology enables" positions ideology not as a passive distortion but as an active psychic affordance — it does something for the subject — while "structuring antagonism" designates the Real contradiction not as one problem among others but as the constitutive negative ground of the social field itself. The word "avoid" crucially implicates both repression and fetishistic disavowal, indicating that the subject's relation to this antagonism is neither ignorance nor knowledge but a motivated, libidinal non-encounter.

Žižek Responds! > [Ideology Critique as an Existentialist Choice](#contents.xhtml_ch6) > Žižek’s Psyche
Theoretical move: The passage argues that ideology operates by harnessing the psyche's capacity for repression and self-destruction, functioning most effectively when subjects mistake ideological experience for authentic feeling (via disavowal); and that Žižek's ideology critique—exemplified through the *They Live* allegory—constitutes a form of existentialist choice demanding a psychic, rather than merely economic, revolution.
