Where the universal intellectual claimed to speak from and toward a universal horizon — articulating demands that transcend any particular group or locale — the specific intellectual intervenes only within delimited, local situations, refusing to make claims that reach beyond the concrete particularity of a given context. This refusal is presented as a gain: it appears to avoid the violence and imperialism that supposedly accompany universal claims. McGowan's theoretical move, however, is to read this as a symptomatic formation rather than a liberation. The specific intellectual is the intellectual subject of particularism — Foucault's particularism specifically — and that particularism rests on a misidentification: it treats universality as inherently a structure of domination (a Master Signifier that colonises particulars) rather than understanding universality as constitutively absent, always-lacking, and therefore never available to any power as a stable resource.
