Sinn - Bedeutung Distinction

ELI5

Language always seems to be pointing at something real and final — a "true meaning" behind all the words — but it can never quite get there; Lacan borrows this idea from a philosopher named Frege to explain why the father's authority and sexual difference are things language keeps circling around without ever pinning down.

Definition

The Sinn–Bedeutung distinction, drawn from Gottlob Frege's philosophy of language, is mobilized by Lacan in Seminar 18 to reframe the logic of the paternal metaphor and, by extension, the structural role of the phallus in language. For Frege, Sinn (sense) is the mode of presentation of a referent — the conceptual route by which an expression reaches its object — while Bedeutung (reference or denotation) is the object itself that the expression ultimately designates. Lacan appropriates this distinction to argue that linguistic signification never achieves its Bedeutung; language perpetually circles around a denotative target — the phallus — that remains structurally out of reach. Every signifying chain produces Sinn (sense, meaning, the play of metaphor and metonymy) precisely because it cannot arrive at Bedeutung directly. The phallus thus functions as the unique Bedeutung of the signifying order as a whole: it is what language gestures toward but never captures, the vanishing point that organizes signification without being absorbed into it.

Within this framework, the Name of the Father is re-read not merely as a signifier that introduces sense (the semantic effect of the paternal metaphor) but as a name that calls someone to a position — it is efficacious because it summons a subject to speak, to stand in as an answer to what the Other lacks. This is why Lacan can say the Father is ultimately a numeral: he occupies a position in a symbolic series rather than being a full, living presence. Castration, in turn, is the reduction of the subject to this same logic — to being a numbered position in the Other's series rather than a self-present being. The Sinn–Bedeutung distinction therefore sharpens the classical Lacanian claim that the subject of the signifier is always "missing" its referential ground: sense proliferates endlessly because denotation is both the condition and the permanent deferral of signification.

Place in the corpus

This concept appears in jacques-lacan-seminar-18 (p. 185) and functions as a technical sharpening of arguments that run across several neighbouring canonical concepts. Its most direct articulation is with the concept of the Father as Numeral: the Fregean frame explains why the Father is a numeral rather than a person — because the Name of the Father operates at the level of Bedeutung (as a positional designator in a series) while generating Sinn (paternal authority, the symbolic law) as its effect. This is also an extension and specification of the canonical account of Castration: if the phallus is the sole Bedeutung that language asymptotically approaches, then castration names the structural impossibility of arriving at that Bedeutung — every speaking subject is "reduced to a number," stripped of any fantasy of full denotative presence.

The distinction likewise illuminates the mechanisms of Metaphor and Condensation. Metaphor in the Lacanian sense is a substitution that produces a new Sinn (the emergence of signification from the paternal metaphor replacing the Mother's desire) while the Bedeutung — phallic signification — is only gestured at, never delivered. Condensation, as the dream-work operation that compresses multiple signifying chains onto one node, can be understood as a production of dense Sinn that nevertheless leaves Bedeutung permanently deferred. The Sinn–Bedeutung distinction also shadows the concept of Foreclosure: where in neurosis the Name of the Father installs a Sinn that covers the inaccessible Bedeutung, in psychosis the Name of the Father is foreclosed, and Bedeutung erupts directly into the Real as hallucination — sense and reference catastrophically collapse into one another. Finally, within the framework of the Discourse of the Analyst and Hysteria, the subject's perpetual question about its own desire is precisely a quest for a Bedeutung (a final referent for the desire of the Other) that the analytic and hysterical discourses alike can only approach through the circulation of Sinn.

Sinn and Bedeutung, it is from there... it is from this opposition articulated by the really inaugurating logician who is Frege, Sinn and Bedeutung, define the models that go further than those of connotation and denotation.

The phrase "go further than those of connotation and denotation" is theoretically loaded because it signals that Lacan is not simply borrowing a linguistic vocabulary but claiming that Frege's logical distinction has a reach that the semiological pair connotation/denotation (associated with structuralist linguistics) does not — specifically, it can account for the gap between the endless production of sense (Sinn) and the unreachable real referent (Bedeutung) that structures the entire phallic economy of language, placing logic, rather than linguistics alone, at the foundation of the symbolic order.
