Sexual Difference as Asymmetry is Žižek's reformulation — drawing on Lacanian sexuation and Hegelian dialectics — of the logical structure of sexual difference as a non-symmetrical, non-binary division. Rather than positing two self-identical, complementary poles (masculine/feminine as two species of the genus "human"), the concept insists that the division is constitutively lopsided: the phallic Master Signifier (S1) arises first as One, and the feminine position is not its mirror image or negation but its unassimilable remainder, excess, or surplus — designated M+ (masculine plus its rest). This is not a difference between two terms that could be enumerated as a pair; it is a difference internal to the One itself, where the second "term" is not a term at all but the non-totalizable excess that marks the incompleteness of the first.

The theoretical mechanism behind this is the "double transcendental genesis" that Žižek identifies: S1 (the Master Signifier, the masculine/phallic quilting point) and the chain of S2 (the symbolic order, the not-all feminine excess) each retroactively posit the other as what fills their own constitutive lack. Neither side is ontologically prior; each is constituted through the failure of the other to achieve closure. This asymmetry is precisely why sexual difference cannot be symmetrized into a binary opposition: the masculine position claims universality (its exception founds a closed set), while the feminine position — corresponding to the not-all — generates an open, non-totalizable series with no grounding exception. The division of the One into One-and-its-excess is therefore the formal logical skeleton of sexual difference, and of difference as such.

Most directly, it is a specification and dramatization of the Not-all: where the not-all identifies the feminine position as a non-totalizable, exception-less series, Sexual Difference as Asymmetry explains why that non-totalizability exists — because the feminine is not a second species but the excess remainder of the masculine's claim to universality. It also extends the logic of the Master Signifier (S1): the masculine position is precisely the position of S1, which quilts the symbolic order and retroactively constitutes itself as the One, while the feminine is what that quilting cannot absorb. The concept thus dramatizes S1's own constitutive Lack: S1 can only be One because there is a remainder it cannot incorporate, a surplus (M+) that marks S1's own incompleteness. The Phallus enters as the name for that function of closure which the masculine position claims but which, structurally, cannot be total. The notion of Contradiction is operative throughout: the One contains its own excess, and this internal crumbling is not a defect but the motor of the structure. The Point de capiton is the mechanism by which the phallic One performs its quilting, while Dialectics is the broader framework within which Žižek inscribes this asymmetry — explicitly contrasting it with Maoist "One divides into Two" symmetrical dialectics. The concept is therefore neither a mere gloss nor a straightforward application; it is a synthetic re-description of sexual difference that draws all these canonical nodes into a single, formally precise formula.

This is how sexual difference works: human species does not divide into two (masculine and feminine), it divides into One (masculine) and its excess, so it is M+.
