Revelation as Traumatic Core

ELI5

Instead of treating the Bible as a complete, problem-free book, this idea says that the holiest part of it is actually the unresolvable tension or "wound" in the story — and that real religious revelation lives in that irreducible crack, not in any smooth version that tries to hide it.

Definition

Revelation as Traumatic Core names the theological claim that the "Word of God" is not exhausted by, nor identical with, the biblical text as a positive literary monument. Rather, it designates the Event whose trace is precisely the constitutive wound or gap within the text — the point where the scriptural narrative fails to close over itself. The concept insists that this structural incompleteness is not a deficiency to be repaired (by fundamentalist harmonisation) or relativised (by liberal pluralism), but is the very site where Revelation — capitalised, irreducible — actually occurs. In Lacanian terms, the traumatic core of Revelation functions analogously to das Ding: it is an excluded interior, a void at the heart of the textual corpus, around which all subsequent theological interpretation orbits without ever arriving at full saturation. Just as das Ding is "at the centre only in the sense that it is excluded," the Event of Revelation is at the centre of Scripture only as that which Scripture cannot contain or domesticate.

This means that a properly theological reading must resist the fantasy operation of papering over the wound with a coherent narrative. Fantasy, in the Lacanian sense, is the frame that gives reality its consistency by shielding the subject from the traumatic Real; the two theological strategies Rollins rejects — fundamentalist unity and liberal pluralism — are precisely such fantasy-formations. Each, in its own way, forecloses the antagonism rather than holding it open. To read faithfully, on this account, is to sustain fidelity to the gap, to refuse the point de capiton that would retroactively quilt the text into seamless sense, and instead to remain at the level of what Lacan might call the extimate kernel: the traumatic core that is most intimate to the text's meaning yet radically unassimilable to it.

Place in the corpus

Within rollins-peter-the-fidelity-of-betrayal-towards-a-church-beyond-belief-paraclete, Revelation as Traumatic Core is the hinge concept around which Rollins organises his theological epistemology. It appears at the point in the argument where the nature of Scripture is at stake, and it mobilises several of the cross-referenced canonical Lacanian concepts at once. The concept is most directly an extension of the Gap: as the canonical synthesis shows, Lacan's gap is productive rather than merely negative, and the "fashioning of the signifier and the introduction of a gap or hole in the real is identical." Rollins applies this structural logic to theology — the gap in the biblical text is not a failure but the positive inscription of the traumatic Event. Similarly, the concept draws on das Ding's excluded-interior logic and on Extimacy's inside-that-is-outside topology: the traumatic core of Revelation is most intimately "within" the text while being precisely what the text cannot fully symbolise or contain.

The concept also functions as an implicit critique of Master Signifier and Point de capiton operations. Both of those canonical Lacanian concepts describe how a quilting point arrests the sliding of signification and produces the illusion of a unified, consistent whole. Fundamentalism and liberal pluralism are, on this reading, rival attempts to install such a quilting point. Revelation as Traumatic Core demands that no such suturing be allowed — keeping the antagonism (another cross-referenced canonical) open is not a problem but the condition of genuine theological fidelity. The concept is thus best understood as a specification and theological re-application of the Lacanian logic of the constitutive gap, das Ding, and extimacy, translated into the register of scriptural hermeneutics.

Key formulations

The Fidelity of Betrayal: Towards a Church Beyond BeliefPeter Rollins · 2008 (p.58)

the attempt to take a view that acknowledges the dark core of Revelation testified to in the gap within the story: the traumatic core of a Revelation worthy of the capital 'R.'

The phrase "dark core of Revelation testified to in the gap within the story" is theoretically loaded because it performs a precise Lacanian move: the gap is not a deficiency but the positive testimony — the trace — of what cannot be directly represented. Capitalising "Revelation" enacts a structural distinction analogous to the difference between an empirical object and das Ding: the lower-case "revelation" would be any ordinary textual disclosure, while "Revelation" with a capital 'R' names the traumatic Real-Event that the text can only witness through its own constitutive incompleteness.

Theoretical move: The passage argues that the "Word of God" is not identical with the biblical text but is the traumatic Event that produces the constitutive gap/wound within the text; rather than patching over this wound through either fundamentalist unity or liberal pluralism, a properly theological reading must hold the irreducible antagonism open as the very site of Revelation.
