Retroactive Responsibility
ELI5
Retroactive Responsibility means that once you've claimed something as yours — even something you were just born with, like your body or your family — you become responsible for it, as if you had chosen it all along, even though you never actually made that choice.
Definition
Retroactive Responsibility names the formal-logical structure by which a subject becomes answerable for a natural or pre-given substantial content that it did not produce but has taken up through the empty gesture of the signifier. The Hegelian move at stake — "substance as subject" — does not require that the subject actively generate its own ground; it requires only that the subject formally repeat what has already happened, and in so doing assume it as its own. This act of assumption is not material but purely formal: the subject inserts a signifier into what was merely found, and this insertion retroactively converts facticity into freedom, natural necessity into chosen origin. What was simply there (the subject's biological constitution, its "natural-substantial base") becomes — after the fact — the product of an "eternally past, primordial act" of free choice. Responsibility here is not causal but structural: it is generated by the retroactive logic of the signifier itself.
This is why the concept articulates a "unity of opposites" in the Lacanian-Hegelian sense: radical bodily externality (what the subject simply finds as its material condition) passes into pure interiority of thought (what the subject now owns as its own act). The phallus, in Žižek's reading, is the privileged Lacanian signifier for precisely this conversion — the operator that makes a given, contingent, bodily fact into the bearer of symbolic responsibility. The retroactive temporality is essential: the primordial act is always already past, irrecoverable, and yet it functions as if it had been freely chosen. The "as if" is not a fiction superimposed on reality but the constitutive structure through which the subject is constituted as subject at all.

This concept appears in slavoj-zizek-the-sublime-object-of-ideology-the-essential-zizek-verso-2009 as part of Žižek's elaboration of the Hegelian-Lacanian logic of the signifier. It functions as a specification of how several canonical concepts interlock: the Master Signifier provides the formal, empty gesture through which facticity is retroactively claimed; the Phallus is identified as the Lacanian name for the signifier that performs this conversion of externality into interiority; Repetition supplies the temporal logic — the "eternally past, primordial act" is accessible only through its repetition in the present, never as an original; and Dialectics provides the overarching Hegelian frame in which natural substance is "sublated" into subjective form not by being destroyed but by being formally assumed. The concept thus sits at the junction of the Hegelian "substance as subject" thesis and Lacan's account of the signifier's constitutive function.
In relation to Lack and Identification, Retroactive Responsibility describes the mechanism by which the subject identifies with its own natural-substantial base — not by recognizing itself in it (imaginary identification) but by assuming it through a symbolic act that is always retroactively posited. This aligns with the logic of symbolic identification (Ego Ideal), where what is assumed is always already marked by the Other's signifier. The concept extends rather than critiques these canonicals: it specifies how the formal assumption of lack or identification occurs in time — always after the fact, always as if it had been chosen, always via an empty signifying gesture that converts the found into the owned.
Key formulations
The Sublime Object of Ideology (page unknown)
as soon as the universal form of the Spirit comprises natural contents, the subject is formally responsible for it even if it is materially something which he simply found: the subject is treated as if, by means of an eternally past, primordial act, he freely chose his own natural-substantial base.
The quote is theoretically loaded because it holds together two logically opposed terms — "formally responsible" and "materially something which he simply found" — and shows them to be simultaneously true: the disjunction between form and matter is precisely what the signifier exploits. The phrase "eternally past, primordial act" names the retroactive temporal structure that is the engine of the conversion: the act was never present, yet it functions as origin, making the "as if" of free choice into the operative truth of subjective responsibility.

INTRODUCTION
Theoretical move: The passage argues that the Hegelian move of "substance as subject" is accomplished not through increased activity but through an empty, purely formal gesture — the signifier — by which the subject assumes/repeats as its own act what has already happened; and it demonstrates this through the funeral rite, the Fall, and culminates in reading the phallus as the Lacanian signifier of this formal conversion, the "unity of opposites" where radical bodily externality passes into pure interiority of thought.
