Sometimes we think people follow rules that already exist before they act — but this idea says that the rule only really becomes real through the action itself, and we can only see what rule was being followed by looking back at what was done.
Definition
Retroactive Norm-Generation names the dialectical structure whereby the ethical or symbolic norm that appears to precede and authorize an act is in fact produced by that very act's actualization. Rather than a pre-given universal rule that the subject consults before acting, the norm achieves its reality only in and through the concrete enactment it is supposed to govern. This is the core of what Žižek, drawing on both Hegel and Lacan, calls "concrete universality": the universal (the norm, the law) does not stand apart from its particular instantiations as an abstract template, but comes-into-being retroactively as those instantiations take place. The locus classicus in the source is Antigone's ethical act, which does not implement a pre-existing rule but rather inaugurates the very norm that will have guided it — making the norm visible only nachträglich, after the fact of its performance.
This structure is not contingent on conscious intentionalism. The argument explicitly invokes Kleist's account of thought forming in the course of speech — where articulation is not the expression of a pre-formed idea but the very medium through which the idea constitutes itself — and the Lacanian "efficacy of the signifier," where the signifier does not represent an already-present meaning but generates meaning as an effect of its operation.
