Retroactive Effect of Signification
ELI5
When you read the last word of a sentence, you suddenly understand what the whole sentence meant — meaning works backwards, not forwards. Lacan says all of language, identity, and even ideology works this way: meaning is always pinned down after the fact, not built up piece by piece.
Definition
The Retroactive Effect of Signification names the temporal structure by which meaning is produced in the Lacanian account of the signifying chain: the effect of a signifier is never immediate or present-tense, but is always generated backwards — après coup — from a retroactively installed anchoring point. This logic is theorized most precisely through the operation of the point de capiton (the quilting point), the Master Signifier that, by being "sewn" into a chain of floating signifiers, retroactively fixes their meaning and arrests what would otherwise be an endless slide of signification. Prior to the quilting point's intervention, signifiers do not carry determinate meaning; it is only in retrospect, once the Master Signifier has intervened, that the chain can be said to have "meant" something all along. The subject is produced in and through this same retroactive operation: subjectivity is not an origin but an effect, a meaning attributed backwards to what was initially only a sequence of signifying elements.
This principle has immediate consequences for the theory of ideology and identification. If meaning is always constituted after the fact, then ideology's power lies precisely in its capacity to generate the illusion that meaning was always already there — a transferential illusion that sutures contingent signifying chains to the appearance of necessity. The difference between imaginary identification (with the ideal ego, the specular image) and symbolic identification (with the ego-ideal, the point in the Other from which the subject sees itself) is itself structured by this retroactivity: symbolic identification installs the perspective from which the subject's past and present can be re-read as coherent, meaningful, and directed.

This concept is native to slavoj-zizek-the-sublime-object-of-ideology-the-essential-zizek-verso-2009, where it functions as the temporal mechanism underlying the Graph of Desire's operation. Within that argument, the Retroactive Effect of Signification is the hinge connecting three canonical concepts: the Graph of Desire (which maps the two-tiered structure of demand and desire crossed by a retroactive signifying vector), Alienation (which establishes that the subject is always already constituted through a pre-given signifying chain it did not devise), and the Ego Ideal / Ideal Ego pair (which marks the difference between symbolic and imaginary identification — a difference that only becomes legible once a retroactive anchoring point has been established). The concept is thus a specification of the Graph of Desire's temporal logic rather than a free-standing term: it explains how the point de capiton does its work.
In relation to the cross-referenced canonicals, the Retroactive Effect of Signification extends Alienation's insight — that the subject is eclipsed by the signifier — by adding the precise temporal form of that eclipse: the subject is not just constituted through signifiers but constituted belatedly, in a gesture of retroactive attribution. It also illuminates why ideological identification (via the Ego Ideal) has the character of a transferential illusion: symbolic identification with the gaze of the Other always involves reading one's prior states as having "meant" submission to that Other all along. The Gaze, as the objet a of the visual field, is itself retroactively organized — one recognizes it as having been watching only after the quilting point has fixed the field of vision. The concept thus sits at the intersection of the temporal (après coup), the structural (point de capiton), and the political (ideology as necessary illusion), binding together the major coordinates of Žižek's argument.

The Sublime Object of Ideology (page unknown)
Lacan's emphasis is precisely on this retroactive character of the effect of signification with respect to the signifier... the effect of meaning is always produced backwards, apres coup.
The phrase "retroactive character of the effect of signification with respect to the signifier" is theoretically loaded because it formally separates the signifier (which comes first, in time) from its signification (which is produced only afterwards), inverting the intuitive assumption that meaning accumulates forward; the Latin-French term "apres coup" — Lacan's translation of Freud's Nachträglichkeit — further anchors this in the psychoanalytic concept of deferred action, linking the production of meaning to the same belated structure by which trauma and fantasy are constituted in the unconscious.

INTRODUCTION
Theoretical move: The passage advances a theory of the Graph of Desire's operation by showing that the point de capiton retroactively fixes meaning through the Master Signifier, and that this quilting operation grounds both ideology (as transferential illusion) and subjectivity (as the difference between imaginary identification with the ideal ego and symbolic identification with the ego-ideal/gaze of the Other).
Lacan's emphasis is precisely on this retroactive character of the effect of signification with respect to the signifier... the effect of meaning is always produced backwards, apres coup.
