Ressentiment is when, instead of genuinely grieving something you've lost and working toward something better, you just stew in bitterness and blame — your whole identity becomes about hating whoever you think took it from you, rather than wanting something good for yourself.

Definition

In Fisher's usage, ressentiment — drawn from Nietzsche's analysis of the slave's reactive inversion of value — names a psychic-political stance toward loss that is distinguished from productive mourning or genuine political energy. It designates the posture of grasping what has been lost purely through a negative, resentful lens: defining the value of the lost object entirely by the fact of its loss and by hostility toward those held responsible, rather than by any affirmative relation to what the object promised.
