Regressive Synthesis

ELI5

When we ask "where did everything come from?" and keep tracing backward through causes and conditions, we're doing a "regressive synthesis" — and Kant's point is that this backward-tracing always ends up tying our thinking in knots, because the final answer we're looking for (a first cause, a total universe) can never actually be checked against experience.

Definition

Regressive Synthesis names the specific logical-temporal structure by which cosmological ideas in Kant's Critique of Pure Reason operate: they move backward through the chain of conditions, seeking an unconditioned ground for any given conditioned appearance. Unlike progressive or constructive synthesis, which builds outward from given intuitions toward further experience, regressive synthesis tracks the series of conditions in the direction of their origin — from conditioned to condition, from effect to cause, from part to whole — in pursuit of a totality that would anchor the entire series. It is "regressive" in the precise Kantian sense: it retreats toward the ground, not advances toward new objects.

The critical significance of the concept, as the Theoretical move makes clear, is that this regressive structure systematically generates antinomies. Because regressive synthesis aims at the unconditioned — at a terminus that would complete the series of conditions — it inevitably overshoots any possible empirical determination. The unconditioned it demands is either "too large" (an infinite, completed totality of conditions) or "too small" (an absolute first beginning that is itself unconditioned), and neither can be given in possible experience. The resulting contradictions are not contingent errors of reasoning but structurally necessary products of reason's own regulative drive: the cosmological ideas exposed by regressive synthesis are, as Kant concludes, groundless fictions — "dialectical illusions" — that motivate the turn from dogmatic metaphysics to the critical/sceptical method.

Place in the corpus

Within kant-immanuel-critique-of-pure-reason, Regressive Synthesis occupies the hinge between Kant's analytic of experience and his dialectic of pure reason. It is the procedural form by which Reason — as cross-referenced in this corpus — overreaches the Understanding. The concept thus directly feeds the Cosmological Antinomy: the regressive movement toward the unconditioned is precisely what generates the contradictions (Thesis/Antithesis pairs) that antinomial thinking exposes. In this sense, Regressive Synthesis is the generative mechanism of the Contradiction the antinomies display; it is not merely a description of error but the structural engine that makes cosmological dialectics inevitable.

Relative to the cross-referenced canonicals, Regressive Synthesis functions as a specification of how Reason's Infinite demand collides with the finite categories of the Understanding, producing the structural impasse that is the Cosmological Antinomy. The Infinite canonical makes clear that Kantian regulative ideas perpetually approach but never attain their object — Regressive Synthesis is precisely that perpetual approach operating in reverse, toward a ground that recedes. The Reality and Skepticism cross-references are also implicated: the "reality" Regressive Synthesis pursues (a completed totality of conditions) is one that can never be constituted within the bounds of possible experience, licensing a skeptical/critical posture over any dogmatic claim to have found it. Dialectics, too, is relevant — but in its Kantian rather than Hegelian inflection: not a productive negativity driving toward Absolute knowing, but an "implacable" structural tension between reason's demand and experience's limits that the critical method must diagnose rather than resolve.

whatever side of the question regarding the unconditioned of the regressive synthesis of phenomena it favoured

The phrase "unconditioned of the regressive synthesis" is theoretically loaded because it names the precise target — the unconditioned — that regressive synthesis is driven to seek, while the qualifier "of phenomena" signals that this synthesis operates strictly within the domain of appearances, making the unconditioned it pursues structurally unreachable; "whatever side it favoured" then immediately signals the antinomial impasse, since no side can be favoured without generating a symmetrical contradiction on the other.

Theoretical move: Kant argues that cosmological ideas systematically generate antinomies because they are structurally either "too large" or "too small" for any possible empirical conception of the understanding, and that this structural mismatch exposes the cosmological ideas as groundless fictions untethered from possible experience—a finding that motivates the sceptical/critical method over dogmatic metaphysics.
