A "pure means" is any activity that feels complete or satisfying in itself, not because it leads somewhere useful — and capitalism has no room for this, because it needs everything to be aimed at making a profit.

Definition

Pure Means, as theorized in McGowan's Capitalism and Desire, names those instances of activity — labor, the strike, the workings of the unconscious — whose satisfaction is immanent to the activity itself, untethered from any external end or telos. The concept exposes a structural remainder that capitalism cannot metabolize: a mode of human doing in which the means does not "realize itself in an end," and therefore cannot be absorbed into the teleological grammar of profit, productivity, or exchange.
