Psychologism
ELI5
Psychologism is the mistake of thinking that something fundamentally structural or systemic — like the way language splits us, or the contradictions built into an economic system — is really just about how individuals feel or think on the inside. Both Lacan and Kornbluh warn that making this mistake covers up what's really going on and gets in the way of genuine understanding.
Definition
Psychologism, as the term appears across these two occurrences, names the ideological and theoretical error of reducing structural or Real-level phenomena to the plane of individual psychology. In the Lacanian register (Seminar 12), psychologism designates any attempt to locate the Real with which psychoanalysis deals inside the domain of the psychological — that is, to treat what is constitutively impossible, split, and exterior (the Real as remainder, the subject as Entzweiung) as if it were a fact of inner mental life or ego-experience. For Lacan, this constitutes not merely a methodological mistake but a "radical deviation" and the outright "negation of psychoanalysis," because the Real is by definition what resists psychological capture: it is produced as the remainder when the possible is negated, not as a content available for psychological inspection. The topology of the Möbius strip — where inside and outside are continuous — is precisely the formal apparatus that shows why psychological interiority cannot be the correct framework: the subject is not an interior; it is constituted on an edge, a cut, a surface without a back.
In the critical-theoretical register (Kornbluh), psychologism names the ideological displacement of structural contradictions — specifically, the antagonisms internal to capital — onto individual psychological experience. It is an operation of suture: by translating systemic, structural problems into matters of personal psychology, psychologism forecloses the kind of structural critique that could actually identify their cause. Freud's economic metapsychology, with its figurative and disequilibrate account of the drive, is counterposed to psychologism precisely because it maintains structural logic rather than naturalizing it as a feature of individual minds. In both registers, then, psychologism functions as the name for a theoretical regression: the return of structure to psychology, of the impossible-Real to the merely possible-subjective, of systemic antagonism to personal interiority.
Place in the corpus
In jacques-lacan-seminar-12-1, psychologism appears as the foil against which Lacan defines the proper object and method of psychoanalysis. It is positioned as the error that collapses the distinction between the Real and the domain of ego-experience or inner mental life. This connects directly to the cross-referenced concepts of Topology and Knowledge: Topology is precisely the formal language that makes legible why the subject cannot be grasped through psychological interiority (the Möbius strip dissolves the inside/outside opposition the psychological frame requires), and Knowledge (savoir) in Lacan's sense is an unconscious, structural knowing that operates without a subject being "responsible" for it — not a psychological content. Psychologism is also implicitly connected to the Ego and Alienation: the ego, as imaginary construct and site of méconnaissance, is exactly what psychologism mistakes for the whole of the subject, while alienation names the structural splitting that psychologism papers over. Entzweiung (splitting) is the direct Hegelian term Lacan deploys to ground the structure that psychologism denies.
In kornbluh-anna-realizing-capital-financial-and-psychic-economies-in-victorian-for, psychologism occupies a diagnostic role in a materialist-critical argument: it is the ideological mechanism by which the structural logic of capital is naturalized and mystified. Here the concept functions as a specification of Lacanian Lack and Alienation applied to political economy — the displacement of structural contradiction onto individual psychology mirrors the ego-level misrecognition that covers over the constitutive lack in the subject. Kornbluh's argument that Freudian metapsychology resists psychologism by maintaining a "figurative and structural account" of economy aligns with the Lacanian insistence (anchored in Knowledge) that structural articulation — not psychological content — is the proper register of analytic and critical discourse. Psychologism is thus, in both sources, the concept-name for the theoretical regression that structural thinking (topological, economic, or metapsychological) must refuse.
Key formulations
Seminar XII · Crucial Problems for Psychoanalysis (alt. translation) (p.305)
To look for the real that psychoanalysis deals with in the psychological, is the principle of a radical deviation. Every reduction, every attempt to return...of the exhaustion of psychoanalysis in some psychologism...is the negation of psychoanalysis.
The phrase "exhaustion of psychoanalysis in some psychologism" is theoretically loaded because "exhaustion" implies that psychologism does not merely misread psychoanalysis but depletes it entirely — draining out its constitutive difference — while "negation of psychoanalysis" raises the stakes to a structural self-cancellation: any theory that locates the Real in the psychological has ceased to be psychoanalysis in any meaningful sense, having dissolved its defining object (the Real as impossible remainder) back into the very register (the psychological) that psychoanalysis was designed to exceed.

Theoretical move: Lacan argues that the Real is constituted through the impossible — not as a condition of possibility (the Kantian-psychological error) but as the remainder produced when the possible is negated — and links this structure to the triad of subject, knowledge, and sex via the topology of the Möbius strip and the concept of Entzweiung, grounding the analytic relationship to the symptom in this splitting.
