Psychological Construction

The "psychological construction" is one of three epistemological frameworks through which the subject can be constituted—alongside the psychoanalytic and the historicist constructions—as Copjec argues in her reading of the Clérambault case. What defines the psychological construction specifically is its reliance on the undecidability of evidence: the subject is posited as a locus of hidden inner experience ("lived experience"), yet no piece of evidence can ever definitively confirm or refute what that inner life contains. This epistemological impasse is not a contingent failure of method but the very condition that constitutes the psychological subject. The "secret" inner world is simultaneously invoked and rendered permanently inaccessible, producing a subject whose interiority is its founding fiction.

Crucially, the psychological construction is distinguished from the psychoanalytic one precisely because psychoanalysis dissolves rather than preserves this fiction. Where the psychological framework treats the subject's inner states as real but undecidable, psychoanalysis replaces "lived experience" with the overdetermination of the subject by the signifier—the subject is not a reservoir of hidden knowledge but an effect of the symbolic chain, split and constituted by what cannot be represented within it. The psychological construction thus operates in the same problematic space as the historicist construction: both retain a fantasy of depth (psychological interiority in one case, pathological or period-specific experience in the other) that psychoanalysis systematically dismantles.

This concept appears in Copjec's Read My Desire (source slug: radical-thinkers-joan-copjec-read-my-desire-lacan-against-the-historicists-verso), where it functions as one term in a tripartite taxonomy designed to isolate what is specifically psychoanalytic about psychoanalysis's construction of the subject. The concept gains its precision negatively: it is what the psychoanalytic construction is not. Where the psychoanalytic framework installs the Signifier as the agent of overdetermination that displaces any notion of a pre-given inner subject, the psychological construction sustains a fantasy of hidden interiority. This aligns the psychological construction with the fetishistic logic described in the corpus's account of the Fetish: just as the fetish simultaneously acknowledges and disavows a fundamental lack, the psychological subject is built around a lack of evidence that is never acknowledged as structural but is instead perpetually deferred as "undecidable."

The concept also stands in implicit contrast to the Historicist Construction (a named cross-reference), which reduces the subject to its pathological or period-specific experience. Both historicist and psychological constructions are critiqued in Copjec's argument for failing to register the Lacanian insight that the Subject is constituted by, and as, the gap opened by the Signifier rather than by any positive experiential content. The Pleasure Principle is a further relevant anchor: the psychological construction operates within a homeostatic fantasy in which the subject's inner life could in principle be made legible and stable, whereas psychoanalysis insists that the subject is organized around the constitutive failure of such closure. The Gaze offers a structural analogy as well: just as the gaze cannot be located within the visual field yet organizes it, the "inner truth" posited by the psychological construction is nowhere to be found yet structures the entire evidentiary enterprise around itself.

The phrase "undecidability of any and all evidence" is theoretically loaded because it identifies the epistemological condition not as a methodological obstacle to be overcome but as the core — the positive, constitutive mechanism — of the psychological construction itself; the subject is produced precisely by the permanent deferral of evidential closure, making the fantasy of hidden interiority structurally self-sealing rather than empirically refutable.
