Proletariat as Substance-less Subjectivity

In Žižek's reading of Hegel through Marx, "proletariat as substance-less subjectivity" names the historical-ontological condition of the worker under capitalism who has been progressively stripped of all objective, substantial determinations — property, guild membership, communal belonging, organic ties to the means of production — until what remains is pure subjectivity without any supporting substance. This is not merely an economic description but a Hegelian-dialectical one: the proletariat is the living embodiment of the movement by which the Subject becomes absolute precisely by losing all substantial content. In Hegelian terms, substance and subject are meant to converge at the endpoint of Geist's self-realization; here, however, the convergence is monstrous — the subject is "freed" from substance not in triumphant self-actualization but in dispossession, yielding a subjectivity that is formally free (as a legal subject able to sell labor-power) but substantively void.

This concept functions as the anthropological underside of Capital's role as "automatic subject." Where Capital is self-positing substance that swallows all subjectivity into its self-valorizing circuit, the proletariat is the subject-remainder expelled from that circuit — the pure negativity that Capital requires in order to reproduce itself. Žižek's Hegelian frame reveals this as an "objective fantasy": the ideological mystification by which workers' exploitation is concealed beneath Capital's apparent self-movement. The proletariat's substance-lessness is thus both a real historical condition produced by the separation of the worker from objective conditions, and the symptom that Capital's dialectic cannot sublate — the constitutive antagonism that neither Hegel nor Marx could fully think.
