Primary Process
ELI5
The primary process is how the unconscious part of your mind works while you sleep or when feelings surge up without control — it plays fast and loose with time and logic, squashing many ideas together or sliding energy from one thought to another, unlike the orderly, step-by-step thinking you do when you're awake and focused.
Definition
The primary process names the mode of psychic functioning characteristic of the unconscious system (Ucs.), defined by the free mobility of libidinal cathexis along associative chains. In contrast to the secondary process—which governs waking, preconscious/conscious thought through bound, regulated cathexis and logical sequencing—the primary process operates according to two cardinal principles: exemption from mutual contradiction, and timelessness (the unconscious knows no temporal order, no "before" or "after"). These features license the dream-work's most characteristic operations: cathexis can be wholly transferred, condensed onto a single nodal presentation, or shifted along associative paths without the resistance that verbal-logical thinking imposes. The primary process is therefore the economic substrate that makes condensation and displacement possible—they are its visible, formal expressions. Regression (topographic, temporal, and formal) is its phenomenal signature in the dream: the drive-loaded wish moves backward through the psychic apparatus to produce hallucinatory wish-fulfilment rather than motoric discharge.
Freud's introduction of the compulsion to repeat in Beyond the Pleasure Principle retroactively reframes the primary process. If the primary process had previously been governed by the pleasure principle (seeking discharge, tension-reduction), the compulsion to repeat reveals a layer "more primal" still: the tendency of all drives to restore a prior state. The primary process is thus caught within a more archaic logic—not simple pleasure-seeking, but the binding of excitation that is itself in the service of a deeper conservative tendency oriented toward death. This makes the primary process not merely the motor of wish-fulfilment but an intermediate layer between the regulatory economy of pleasure and the radical beyond that Freud names the death drive.
Place in the corpus
The concept appears across two distinct Freudian registers in the corpus. In barnes-and-noble-classics-sigmund-freud-gina-masucci-mackenzie-a-a-brill-transla, the primary process is introduced as the hallmark of the dream-work: it is what makes dream-formation seem so remote from "correct" psychic activity. Here it anchors the distinction between preconscious thought-streams and the unconscious wish that drives them, functioning as the economic principle that enables condensation and displacement — the two "craftsmen" of the manifest dream. In penguin-modern-classics-sigmund-freud-beyond-the-pleasure-principle-and-other-wr and its companion source, the primary process is named explicitly in contradistinction to the secondary process, now as background to the argument about the compulsion to repeat and the death drive: the primary process belongs to the pleasure-principle era of Freud's metapsychology, while Beyond (Jenseits) exposes an even more archaic logic beneath it. In theory-keywords (p.85), the concept is embedded in a multi-layered account of the Unconscious that moves from Freud's topographical-economic descriptions through Lacan's reformulation of the unconscious as structured by the Other/language. There, the primary process's defining features — timelessness and exemption from contradiction — are presented as Freud's own evidence for what Lacan will recast as the structural-linguistic properties of the Ucs. The primary process thus functions as the economic-topographical predecessor to the Lacanian account of the Unconscious: where Freud explains dream-distortion through free cathexis, Lacan translates the same operations into the formal laws of the signifying chain (condensation → metaphor; displacement → metonymy). The concept cross-references Repression (whose mechanism presupposes a primary-process system to which repressed material returns), the Pleasure Principle (which the primary process ostensibly serves, before the death drive complicates this), Drive (whose conservative tendency the primary process transmits), and Trauma (whose repetitive return bypasses the primary process's wish-fulfilment logic, pointing toward the Beyond).
Key formulations
Beyond the Pleasure Principle and Other Writings (page unknown)
I termed this kind of process in the unconscious the 'primary' psychic process, in contradistinction to the 'secondary' process that obtains in our normal waking life.
The quote is theoretically loaded precisely because it enacts a differential definition: the primary process acquires its meaning only through its explicit opposition to the "secondary" process — the one that "obtains in our normal waking life." The word "obtains" signals that the secondary process is a norm of reality-adaptation, against which the primary process stands as exception and ground; Freud thereby installs a hierarchy in which what is most fundamental (primary) is precisely what is least accessible to consciousness, reversing any common-sense equation of "primary" with "obvious" or "manifest."

**(E) THE PRIMARY AND SECONDARY PROCESSES—REGRESSION**
Theoretical move: Freud synthesizes competing theories of dream formation by subordinating them to his unified framework of wish-fulfilment and dream-work, then advances the argument by distinguishing the preconscious stream of thought from the unconscious wish that energizes it—establishing that the most complex mental operations occur without consciousness, and that regression and the primary process are the hallmarks of the dream-work proper.
All that we have termed the 'dream-work' seems so remote from the psychic processes recognised by us as correct, that the severest judgments of the authors as to the low psychic activity of dreaming seem to us well founded.

V
Theoretical move: Freud argues that the compulsion to repeat reveals a universal conservative character of all drives — the tendency to restore a prior state — and from this derives the thesis that the ultimate goal of all life is death (return to the inorganic), redefining the death drive not as a force opposed to life but as the deepest logic of organic striving itself.

Theoretical move: Freud advances the thesis that all drives are fundamentally conservative—oriented toward restoring a prior, inorganic state—thereby identifying the compulsion to repeat as a universal property of organic life and deriving the formula "the goal of all life is death," which redefines self-preservation drives as mere partial detours on the path to death rather than genuine forces of progress.

**Transference** > **Unconscious**
Theoretical move: The passage constructs a multi-layered theoretical account of the Unconscious by moving from Freud's topographical and economic descriptions (timelessness, exemption from contradiction, primary process) through Lacan's reformulation of the unconscious as structured by and dependent on the Other/language, to contemporary arguments (McGowan, Zupančič) that the unconscious is the site of ontological negativity, genuine freedom, and desire that exceeds conscious will.
I have chosen to regard these two processes as distinguishing marks of the so-called primary psychical process...The processes of the system Ucs. are timeless; i.e. they are not ordered temporally, are not altered by the passage of time
