Prevailing Interpretedness

Prevailing interpretedness is Heidegger's term, as mobilized in McCormick's account, for the sedimented, inherited layer of public understanding that structures how Dasein encounters the world prior to any explicit theoretical reflection. It is the condition in which Gerede — idle talk, chatter — has so thoroughly colonized the field of meaning that the originary disclosive encounter with things (what Heidegger calls "original interpretedness") is covered over and replaced by a secondhand, averaged-out intelligibility. In this condition, heritage — the accumulated interpretive resources of a tradition — ceases to be a living resource and becomes instead a site of false consciousness: one inherits meanings, judgments, and frameworks without recognizing their contingency or their distance from the phenomena they were originally meant to disclose.

The philosophical-critical task, on this account, is a kind of retrieval (Wiederholung): to work back through prevailing interpretedness toward the originary interpretive encounter it has obscured. McCormick frames this movement on the model of the Greek philosophers' struggle against sophistry, whereby authentic philosophical discourse must wrest genuine insight from the grip of a rhetorical, socially dominant discourse that passes for knowledge. Prevailing interpretedness is thus not mere error but a structural condition of understanding-in-the-world — the ideological atmosphere of everydayness in which things "show themselves" only in pre-packaged, socially sanctioned ways that foreclose genuinely independent, pre-theoretical seeing.

Within its source (samuel-mccormick-the-chattering-mind-a-conceptual-history-of-everyday-talk-unive, p.183), prevailing interpretedness functions as the negative pole against which authentic philosophical retrieval is defined. It names what philosophical discourse must work through and against — the Heideggerian analogue to what the cross-referenced concept of Ideology theorizes as constitutive false consciousness. Like ideology in the Lacanian/post-Lacanian frame, prevailing interpretedness is not simply mistaken belief layered over a recoverable truth; it is structural, operating at the level of how meaning is publicly available before any individual takes it up. The cross-reference to Alienation is equally apposite: prevailing interpretedness is the form alienation takes in the domain of Sprache and historical inheritance — one is always already captured in an interpretive chain (the tradition's Gerede) that one did not devise and cannot simply exit. It is a specification of alienation in the register of Language as historically sedimented public discourse.

The concept also stands in productive tension with Phenomenology as cross-referenced: where phenomenology (in the Husserlian mode) trusts the phenomenon as self-disclosing, prevailing interpretedness names the condition in which what "shows itself" is precisely what the dominant interpretive fog has allowed to show itself — making genuine phenomenological seeing the hard-won outcome of a critical struggle, not its natural starting point. Original Interpretedness (its direct counterpart in the cross-reference list) names the telos of retrieval, while Sublation, Repetition, and Rhetoric organize the logical structure of the critical-historical movement: the philosopher must repeat the tradition at a deeper level, sublating its rhetorical surface to recover what it conceals, rather than simply negating it from outside.

The quote is theoretically loaded because it performs an explicit equation between Gerede's dominance ("when Gerede prevails") and the transformation of heritage — normally a resource for genuine understanding — into "a site of false consciousness." By glossing Heidegger's technical term "prevailing interpretedness" directly as false consciousness, the formulation bridges Heidegger's existential-ontological vocabulary with the ideology-critical tradition, making visible the political stakes of what might otherwise appear as a purely phenomenological category.
