Premise-Authorship

Premise-Authorship names the structural condition in which a subject, having failed to achieve genuine inward certitude regarding the source or authority of what they assert, outsources the grounding of that assertion to the surrounding public world. In Kierkegaard's analysis of Adler — as mobilized in McCormick's account of "bustling loquacity" — the subject who cannot sustain the weight of a singular claim (for instance, of a revelation, a decision, or an idea) turns outward compulsively, recruiting audience, repetition, and public consensus as substitutes for the internal act of self-authorization. The "premise" of one's speech remains unowned because the authorial position — the standing from which one could vouch for one's own assertion — has never been secured from within. The result is a peculiar structural dependency: the louder and more voluble the subject's proclamation, the more nakedly it signals the absence of genuine subjective grounding. Noise becomes a demand addressed to the Other, asking the Other to retroactively constitute the subject as the author of a meaning the subject cannot itself inhabit.

This concept therefore describes a particular failure of what might be called subjective assumption: the moment at which the signifying act (the thunderous proclamation) is decoupled from its would-be enunciating subject, leaving the premise of the speech act as a kind of unclaimed property awaiting external ratification. In the logic of democratic public culture, this structure becomes normalized and even amplified: quantitative accumulation (repetition by the crowd, consensus, trending opinion) masquerades as the functional equivalent of the singular certitude it replaces. Premise-Authorship thus stands at the intersection of the subject's relation to singularity, the ideology of democratic opinion, and the compulsive outwardness — bustling loquacity — that fills the void where self-mastery is absent.

Reflection is also implicated, as Premise-Authorship marks precisely the failure of genuine self-reflection — the subject's inability to turn back upon its own enunciating position and assume it — generating instead the outward-turned, specular demand for an external mirror to supply the missing ground.
