Postpolitical

Postpolitical, as Žižek deploys it in The Parallax View, names the condition that results when politics is shorn of its constitutive reference to universality and reduced to the administration of competing particular interests. The argument — developed through Rancière — turns on a paradox: the apparently "humanitarian" move to depoliticize human rights (treating them as pre-political, natural, or merely managerial concerns) does not neutralize politics but covertly serves specific political-economic interests while foreclosing genuinely collective political projects. The very gap between abstract, universal Human Rights and the concrete rights of citizens is not an embarrassing inconsistency to be resolved; it is the productive space in which politicization as such occurs — the place where a "part of no-part," those who have no place in the existing order, can lay claim to universality itself.

Eliminating this gap — treating the universal as already given, already administered, already humanitarianly managed — collapses politics into what Žižek calls "postpolitical" negotiation: a play of particular interests without any appeal to a universal horizon that would contest the existing distribution of the sensible. Postpolitics is thus not the absence of conflict but the confinement of conflict to a register that never challenges the structural coordinates of the social order. It is ideology in its most effective form precisely because it presents itself as the end of ideology — as pragmatic, technical, humanitarian management beyond left and right.

In the-parallax-view-slavoj-zizek, the concept of postpolitical is generated at the intersection of several canonical concepts the corpus cross-references. Its most direct anchor is Depoliticization: postpolitical names the achieved result of depoliticization — the stable, administrated condition that depoliticization produces when it successfully neutralizes the appeal to universality. The concept also engages Biopolitics structurally: just as biopolitical management reduces subjects to administered bodies stripped of political subjectivity, postpolitical governance reduces citizens to bearers of particular interests stripped of access to universal claims. Both operations converge on the same effect — the foreclosure of the subject who could contest the order — even if biopolitics operates at the level of bare life and postpolitics at the level of representative negotiation.

The Part of No-Part (Rancière's la part des sans-part) is the concept postpolitical most directly presupposes and, in a sense, names the negation of: genuine politics arises when those who have no recognized place in the social order claim universality; postpolitical negotiation is precisely the condition in which this eruption is pre-empted, every claimant already assigned a particular interest to negotiate. Concrete Universal and Dialectics provide the deeper theoretical scaffolding: the postpolitical forecloses the dialectical movement by which particulars generate a contested universal; it arrests Hegel's concrete universality at the level of abstract, already-given particularity. The Cunning of Reason and Ideology hover in the background — postpolitics is ideology functioning smoothly, particular interests passing themselves off as the neutral management of universal welfare, the cunning of capital operating through humanitarian depoliticization. Jouissance may be inferred as the affective underside of postpolitical consensus: what circulates in humanitarian managerialism, but remains unacknowledged, is the enjoyment of a world safely insulated from genuine political antagonism.

The phrase "play of negotiation of particular interests" is theoretically loaded because "play" signals the frivolous, rule-bound, non-antagonistic character of what remains once universality is expelled, while "particular interests" invokes the Hegelian register in which the particular without the universal is mere contingency — making the sentence a compressed diagnosis of politics as its own self-cancellation when divorced from the universal horizon that alone constitutes it as politics proper.
