Post-Evental Fidelity

ELI5

Sometimes staying true to a life-changing breakthrough doesn't look like moving forward — it looks like going backwards or sideways. Post-Evental Fidelity is the idea that this apparent "regression" can secretly be the real way someone is working through and staying loyal to the breakthrough, even if it doesn't look that way from the outside.

Definition

Post-Evental Fidelity is a concept that Žižek extracts — and critically sharpens — from Badiou's event-theory by raising the question of whether what looks like a "regression" from a founding Event can itself be the form in which fidelity to that Event is actually worked out. In Badiou's framework, an Event ruptures the ordinary situation and demands a truth-process: the subject re-organizes its existence in loyalty to what the Event revealed. Žižek's move in the-parallax-view-slavoj-zizek is to complicate the temporal and phenomenological shape of that fidelity. Rather than fidelity appearing as linear advance or explicit proclamation, it may be enacted precisely through an apparent retreat — a "working-out" that looks regressive from the outside but is, stricto sensu, the continuation of the Event's consequences through oblique, subterranean channels. The concept therefore names a mode of truth-process that is non-obvious, even self-concealing, yet structurally inseparable from the break the Event inaugurated.

This ties directly to Lacanian categories: the subject of fidelity is not transparent to itself (recalling the split between enunciation and statement), and what is "worked out" in a post-evental regression carries the marks of the drive's circular, non-teleological satisfaction — going around the object rather than reaching it directly. The Event, mapped onto Badiou's own Lacanian debts, is linked to the Real and to das Ding, the impossible kernel around which the subject's trajectories orbit. Post-Evental Fidelity thus designates the paradoxical structure whereby fidelity to the Real of a rupture may be sustained precisely in movements that, at the level of the statement, appear as betrayal or retreat.

Place in the corpus

The concept appears in an endnote cluster in the-parallax-view-slavoj-zizek (p. 403), where Žižek is simultaneously constructing a theory of the drive as an ethical/metaphysical category and subjecting Badiou's four truth-procedures to internal critique. It sits at the intersection of two canonical axes: the Badiouian Event (with its demand for ongoing fidelity as truth-process) and the Lacanian drive (with its circular, non-teleological structure of satisfaction). Post-Evental Fidelity is best understood as a specification and internal complication of the Badiouian Event — Žižek accepts the basic structure (Event → fidelity → truth-process) but argues that fidelity need not wear the face of advance; it can work itself out through regression, a movement that maps onto the drive's encircling trajectory rather than a direct arrow toward a goal.

The concept also resonates with das Ding and the Death Drive as cross-referenced canonicals. If the Event irrupts from the situated void — analogous to das Ding as excluded interior — then post-evental fidelity is the subject's ongoing negotiation of proximity to that void, including the detours and apparent retreats that the pleasure principle imposes. The Death Drive's logic of compulsive repetition, re-read not as self-destruction but as the insistence of an originary constitutive loss, further illuminates why "working-out" a breakthrough might structurally resemble regression. The split between enunciation and statement (Enunciation vs Statement) underpins the concept's epistemological dimension: what appears regressive at the level of the statement may be the only form in which the enunciating subject can sustain contact with the Real of the Event.

Key formulations

The Parallax ViewSlavoj Žižek · 2006 (p.403)

was this 'regression' really just a regression, irrelevant to the Event of his breakthrough, or was it the working-out of this breakthrough, that is, stricto sensu, a post-evental fidelity?

The quote's theoretical charge rests on the tension between 'regression' (held in scare-quotes, marking its apparent or surface character) and 'working-out' — a term connoting the labor of the drive's circuit rather than linear progress — combined with the Latinate stricto sensu, which insists this is not a loose metaphor but a precise structural claim: the regression is, rigorously defined, a form of fidelity rather than its absence.

Theoretical move: This endnote cluster advances several interlocking theoretical moves: it articulates drive as an ethical/metaphysical category distinguishable from instinct; critically probes Badiou's four truth-procedures (science, art, politics, love) by exposing their hidden asymmetry (three plus one); and raises the question of whether every order of Being is the disavowal of a founding Event, linking Badiou's event-theory to Lacanian notions of the Real and inscription.
