Post-Evental Fidelity

Post-Evental Fidelity is a concept that Žižek extracts — and critically sharpens — from Badiou's event-theory by raising the question of whether what looks like a "regression" from a founding Event can itself be the form in which fidelity to that Event is actually worked out. In Badiou's framework, an Event ruptures the ordinary situation and demands a truth-process: the subject re-organizes its existence in loyalty to what the Event revealed. Žižek's move in the-parallax-view-slavoj-zizek is to complicate the temporal and phenomenological shape of that fidelity. Rather than fidelity appearing as linear advance or explicit proclamation, it may be enacted precisely through an apparent retreat — a "working-out" that looks regressive from the outside but is, stricto sensu, the continuation of the Event's consequences through oblique, subterranean channels. The concept therefore names a mode of truth-process that is non-obvious, even self-concealing, yet structurally inseparable from the break the Event inaugurated.

This ties directly to Lacanian categories: the subject of fidelity is not transparent to itself (recalling the split between enunciation and statement), and what is "worked out" in a post-evental regression carries the marks of the drive's circular, non-teleological satisfaction — going around the object rather than reaching it directly. If the Event irrupts from the situated void — analogous to das Ding as excluded interior — then post-evental fidelity is the subject's ongoing negotiation of proximity to that void, including the detours and apparent retreats that the pleasure principle imposes. The Death Drive's logic of compulsive repetition, re-read not as self-destruction but as the insistence of an originary constitutive loss, further illuminates why "working-out" a breakthrough might structurally resemble regression. The split between enunciation and statement (Enunciation vs Statement) underpins the concept's epistemological dimension: what appears regressive at the level of the statement may be the only form in which the enunciating subject can sustain contact with the Real of the Event.
