Phonematic Gestalt
ELI5
A "phonematic gestalt" is a cluster of sounds — almost like a sonic fingerprint or a personal sound-pattern — that exists right at the edge of where a person begins to be a self; it's the raw sound-shape a child picks out of the noise around them, just before language and identity fully click into place.
Definition
The phonematic gestalt designates a pre-subjective phonological formation — in the clinical material under discussion, the nonsense-string "Poord'jeli" — that functions as the inaugural resonating structure from which the speaking subject emerges. It is not a fantasy, not yet a signifier in the full symbolic sense, and not an imaginary formation: it occupies a threshold position at the articulation between the Imaginary and the Symbolic, a liminal zone before the subject has been fully constituted through the alienating vel that forces the choice between being and meaning. As a gestalt — an organised, patterned whole — it "cuts out" forms of meaning from the surrounding undifferentiated mass of the language-environment, operating like a resonating or filtering system that makes certain sonic/meaningful units salient while leaving others in the background. It is the phonological precipitate of the encounter with the big Other: both belonging to the order of the Other (Oury explicitly locates it "from the order of the big O, from the big Other") and marking the precise point where subjectivity has not yet fully installed itself within that order.
Theoretically, the phonematic gestalt belongs to neither the unconscious structured like a language (where signifiers operate within differential chains) nor the imaginary register of the specular body-image. Rather, it names the moment of emergence — a kind of proto-symbolic or infra-symbolic node — where sonic material from the field of the Other is organized into a shape that will eventually anchor the subject's desire, fantasy, and speaking being. It is the raw phonological matrix from which the subject will be "born," prefiguring the role that the objet petit a (here in its vocal form) will come to play in structuring fantasy. It thus raises the question Leclaire's response presses: whether the voice, and not the gaze alone, can serve as the object around which fantasy is organized.
Place in the corpus
The concept appears in Seminars 12 and 12-1 (slugs jacques-lacan-seminar-12 and jacques-lacan-seminar-12-1), arising in a clinical-theoretical exchange between Oury and Leclaire. It sits at the intersection of several canonical concepts. With respect to Alienation, the phonematic gestalt marks the moment just prior to its full operation: alienation requires the subject to take up a place in the pre-existing signifying chain, but the phonematic gestalt is the structure that appears at the very threshold of that entry — the sonic raw material being appropriated by the Other before the forced choice between being and meaning fully closes. With respect to Language, the phonematic gestalt is explicitly located within the order of the big Other, yet it precedes the subject's full inscription in the differential signifying chain; it is an infra-linguistic or proto-linguistic formation that "cuts out" meaning-forms from surrounding language, anticipating the constitutive function language will exercise once alienation is complete.
With respect to Fantasy, the concept is introduced precisely as what fantasy is not — Oury argues it is pre-fantasymatic, the point of emergence from which fantasy and its privileged image arise. This relates it to the canonical account of Fantasy ($◇a) by identifying a moment before the barred subject ($) is consolidated enough to sustain the structural copresence with objet petit a that fantasy requires. Its relationship to Objet petit a is specified through the vocal dimension: the gestalt is a sonic formation, raising Leclaire's question about whether the voice (as objet a) can anchor fantasy as effectively as the scopic object. The concept thus functions as a specification and temporal radicalization of both Fantasy and Language — a pre-symbolic zero-point that these canonical concepts presuppose but do not themselves name.
Key formulations
Seminar XII · Crucial Problems for Psychoanalysis (p.173)
this gestalt poord'jeli is very close to the point of emergence or of the birth of the subject... this phonematic gestalt by its essence from the order of the big O, from the big Other
The phrase "by its essence from the order of the big O, from the big Other" is theoretically decisive because it locates the phonematic gestalt not in the Imaginary (the specular, the ego) nor in the subject's own initiative, but in the field of the Other — making it a formation that the subject receives rather than produces, consistent with the Lacanian principle that language and the signifier always pre-exist the subject. Simultaneously, "the point of emergence or of the birth of the subject" situates this structure at the constitutive threshold before full symbolic alienation, marking the exact seam between pre-subjectivity and the speaking subject's entry into the signifying chain.

**Presentation by Monsieur Oury**
Theoretical move: Oury argues that the phonematic gestalt "Poord'jeli" is not a fantasy but rather a pre-subjective phonological structure marking the emergence of the speaking subject, located at the articulation between the Imaginary and the Symbolic, while Leclaire's response opens the question of whether fantasy must be organized around the scopic drive or whether it may equally be constituted by the voice as objet petit a.
this gestalt poord'jeli is very close to the point of emergence or of the birth of the subject... this phonematic gestalt which we previously spoke about... would function a little like a resonating system, cutting out in the surrounding language, forms of meaning

Theoretical move: Oury argues that the "phonematic gestalt" (Poord'jeli) is not a fantasy but rather the pre-symbolic point of emergence of the speaking subject — the locus from which fantasy and its privileged image arise — while Leclaire's response pivots on distinguishing fantasy-forms by the nature of the Lacanian object (scopic vs. vocal) implied within them.
