Penis=Child Equation

The Penis=Child equation names a Freudian symbolic equivalence that Lacan reactivates in Seminar IV as a structural pivot for understanding the asymmetric paths through which boys and girls traverse the Oedipus complex. The equation — drawn from Freud's observation that the girl's wish for a penis is transmuted into the wish for a child — is not treated by Lacan as a piece of developmental psychology but as a symbolic equation: the phallus and the child are made equivalent along a pre-given symbolic track ("vorgezeichneten symbolischen Gleichung"), meaning the substitution is not an accidental condensation but a structurally determined slide within the signifying order.

For Lacan, this equation serves as the hinge between the imaginary and the real registers of the phallus. Where the boy's castration complex forces him to renounce the imaginary phallus in favor of an identification with the symbolic father-function — a notoriously difficult passage — the girl's trajectory is paradoxically more direct: her constitutive lack, her not-having of the penis in the imaginary register, positions her immediately in relation to the father as real bearer of what she lacks. It also intersects with Feminine Sexuality: the "not-all" structure that will be more formally theorized in the late seminars is here embryonically present in the claim that the girl's path is simpler precisely because her relation to lack is less mediated — she does not need to give up an imaginary possession but rather redirects an already-present void. Anxiety and Fetish are implicitly at stake as the background conditions the equation resolves or sidesteps: the boy's difficulty — which is the deeper structural problem Lacan identifies — is essentially the problem of managing the anxiety generated by the proximity of castration and the temptation of a fetishistic solution, whereas the equation marks the girl's different, more immediate articulation of lack and Demand addressed to the real father. The concept thus sits at the intersection of structural sexuation theory and clinical-developmental Oedipal analysis, bridging Freud's empirical observation and Lacan's formal symbolic account.

The phrase "vorgezeichneten symbolischen Gleichung" — "pre-traced" or "pre-inscribed symbolic equation" — is theoretically loaded because it insists that the Penis=Child substitution is not a spontaneous imaginary condensation but a movement along a structurally predetermined symbolic track: the equivalence is inscribed in advance by the symbolic order itself, not generated by individual fantasy. This aligns the equation with Lacan's broader argument that the Oedipus complex is a symbolic structure, not a lived drama, and that the girl's "entry" into it follows a path already marked out by the signifying system of kinship and sexual difference.
