Parallax Shift

Parallax Shift is Žižek's term for the specific dialectical operation by which Hegelian "reconciliation" is achieved — not through the dissolution or sublation of antagonisms into a higher synthesis, but through a change of perspective that allows antagonisms to be recognized as such and thereby perceived in their productive, "positive" role. The move is explicitly distinguished from any idealist resolution: the antagonism remains real and unresolved at the level of content, but the subject's relationship to it is transformed. Hegelian reconciliation, on this reading, is not re-appropriation or overcoming but a sovereign re-framing — what Žižek elsewhere calls a "letting go" or dis-alienation — in which the very persistence of the antagonism is registered as a structural necessity rather than a defect to be corrected.

This concept operates as a precise rejoinder to the standard Marxist/Schelling reproach that Hegel resolves antagonisms "only in thought." Žižek's counter-move is to affirm this reproach but invert its valence: yes, Hegel resolves antagonisms only in thought — and that is the resolution. The parallax shift is a transformation of the gaze rather than of the world, a recognition that the gap between Concept and existence, or between Particular and Universal, is not a failure of thinking but the ontological mark of finitude and the positive engine of the dialectic. The shift does not bridge the gap; it reclassifies the gap as constitutive.

The concept further situates itself against Absolute Knowing and Alienation. Rather than Absolute Knowing as total self-transparency, parallax shift implies a knowing that is constituted by its own irreducible gap — closer to McGowan's and Žižek's reformulations of Absolute Knowing as acknowledgment of an absolute gap within self-identity. And against the Marxist promise of overcoming Alienation, parallax shift refuses any return to an unalienated ground: the antagonism is not healed but reframed as a structural positive.
