Over-rapid Historicization

Over-rapid historicization is when someone tries to explain away something troubling by saying "that's just a product of its time" — but in doing so, they miss the deeper, stubborn core of the problem that keeps coming back no matter how much history changes.

Definition

Over-rapid historicization names an ideological procedure in which the apparent gesture of critique — of contextualizing, relativizing, or historicizing a social phenomenon — itself becomes the mechanism by which ideology sustains itself. Rather than exposing a false universal, over-rapid historicization dissolves the Real kernel of a symptom into its historical conditions of emergence, thereby defusing its disturbing, persistent force. In Žižek's inversion of the classical Marxist model, it is not (only) false universalization that ideology deploys, but the equally ideological move of reducing surplus-enjoyment to a historically contingent formation that will be overcome once the conditions producing it are superseded. The "over-rapid" qualifier is essential: it is not historicization as such that is targeted, but a historicization too hasty to register what stubbornly returns as the same across historical transformations — namely, the Real.
