Over-rapid Historicization

Over-rapid historicization names an ideological procedure in which the apparent gesture of critique — of contextualizing, relativizing, or historicizing a social phenomenon — itself becomes the mechanism by which ideology sustains itself. Rather than exposing a false universal, over-rapid historicization dissolves the Real kernel of a symptom into its historical conditions of emergence, thereby defusing its disturbing, persistent force. In Žižek's inversion of the classical Marxist model, it is not (only) false universalization that ideology deploys, but the equally ideological move of reducing surplus-enjoyment to a historically contingent formation that will be overcome once the conditions producing it are superseded. The "over-rapid" qualifier is essential: it is not historicization as such that is targeted, but a historicization too hasty to register what stubbornly returns as the same across historical transformations — namely, the Real.

This concept is grounded in the Lacanian homology between surplus-value (Marx) and surplus-enjoyment / objet petit a (Lacan). Because jouissance is structurally an excess — a constitutive lack or remainder that the symbolic order cannot absorb — it cannot be dissolved by historical explanation. The "Real kernel" that over-rapid historicization occludes is precisely this: the non-symbolizable core of enjoyment that drives the capitalist machine not despite but through its formal structure of exchange and accumulation. Žižek diagnoses Marx's own "vulgar evolutionist formulations" as an instance of this error: by treating the contradictions of capitalism as a historically determinate problem awaiting a historical solution, Marx failed to think the paradox of surplus-enjoyment, generating both theoretical blind spots and, historically, the irony of 'real socialism.'

It functions as a specification and inversion of the canonical concept of Ideology: where classical Marxist critique targets false universalization (taking a historically specific relation and presenting it as eternal), Žižek argues that the subtler and more "cunning" ideological move is the opposite — dissolving the universal through context, thereby neutralizing what the canonical concept of the Real (indexed here through objet petit a and surplus-enjoyment) insists upon: a remainder that cannot be historicized away. Over-rapid historicization is thus an extension of the Fetishistic Disavowal problematic: just as fetishistic disavowal operates by knowing-and-not-knowing simultaneously, over-rapid historicization operates by appearing to know (contextualizing) while functionally disavowing the non-symbolizable kernel. The concept also bears directly on Objet petit a and Jouissance: because surplus-enjoyment is a structural excess constitutive of the subject's relation to the symbolic order — not a historically produced distortion — any analysis that reduces it to historical contingency re-enacts the very ideological operation it purports to critique. In this sense, over-rapid historicization is the epistemological counterpart to the libidinal mechanism of Castration: the subject's constitutive loss of jouissance cannot be "historically corrected" any more than castration can be undone by improved social arrangements. The concept thus marks the specific point at which Lacanian and Marxist frameworks diverge, while the surplus-value / surplus-enjoyment homology marks the point at which they converge.
