Ontological Minus

The "ontological minus" is Zupančič's name for the constitutive negativity that the signifying order does not merely presuppose but actively re-inscribes within itself. In Saussurean linguistics the bar separating signifier from signified is an external structural relation; Lacan's decisive move, as Zupančič reads it in what-is-sex-alenka-zupancic, is to transpose that same bar into the signifier itself — so that the minus is no longer a boundary between two terms but an internal loop or "twirl" repeated in every act of speech. This is the ontological minus: the lack is not a gap located between elements of the symbolic order but the very engine of the order's self-movement, a parallax inscription by which the structural incompleteness of language shows up as an immanent feature of signification as such.

This ontological minus is simultaneously the ground of the Lacanian subject of the unconscious and the ground of sexual division. Masculinity is structured as belief — the subject relies on the phallus as a signifying support that represses castration, treating the minus as something to be covered over. Femininity is structured as pretense or masquerade — a constitutive deception that does not cover the minus but inhabits it differently, making the display itself the structure. The two positions are therefore not symmetric variants of the same logic but two asymmetric modes of relating to the one and same ontological minus. In this way the concept links the logic of the barred subject ($) — the "with-without" inherent to the signifying order — to the formulas of sexuation, showing sexual difference to be an ontological rather than merely anatomical asymmetry.

The concept lives in what-is-sex-alenka-zupancic at the precise intersection of Zupančič's reading of sexuation and her critique of structuralism. It functions as a specification and deepening of several canonical Lacanian concepts simultaneously. It extends Lack by insisting that the constitutive void is not merely registered by the signifying order from outside (as a "real hole" that the symbolic notates) but is re-produced and repeated inside the signifying order by each utterance — what the canonical synthesis of Lack calls "a logic of lack" becomes here a dynamic, self-iterating ontological feature. It specifies Barred by explaining why the bar cannot be external to the signifier: if the minus were only between signifier and signified, the symbolic order could in principle be sutured; the ontological minus names the reason it cannot be — the bar is inscribed within the signifier's own operation. It connects to Castration through the minus-phi (−φ): castration as the structural effect of the signifier on the sexual relation is here re-described at the ontological level as the parallax loop that every word enacts. Finally, it anchors the asymmetry between Feminine Sexuality (masquerade as constitutive pretense, inhabiting the minus) and Masculinity (belief, covering the minus with the phallus), re-framing the "not-all" not as a merely logical formula but as a different mode of relating to the same ontological wound that language inflicts on every speaking being.
