One of the Signifier

The "One of the Signifier" names the minimal, discrete unit through which the Symbolic register operates — the signifier as a pure differential element, capable of designating any signified whatsoever precisely because it is indifferent to any particular one. Lacan's move in Seminar 22 is to distinguish this strictly Symbolic "One" from the "One of meaning," which is an effect — produced by, and dependent upon, the One of the signifier. The signifier does not carry meaning intrinsically; it generates meaning as a secondary effect through its combinatory and substitutive operations. This is why Lacan says the One of the signifier "only operates in fact by being able to be employed to designate any signified whatsoever": its power is grounded in its radical arbitrariness and substitutability, not in any semantic content.

Within the broader topological argument of Seminar 22, the One of the Signifier is set against the objet petit a, which functions as an irrational, non-conjunctive gap between the Symbolic and the Imaginary registers. The objet a is emphatically not reducible to either the One of the signifier or the One of meaning; it marks precisely what falls outside both — the cause of desire that cannot be signified or given meaning. The Borromean structure makes this separation formal: the three registers (Real, Symbolic, Imaginary) are held together topologically, not through fusion or synthesis, and the One of the Signifier names the mode of consistency specific to the Symbolic ring, which holds by pure differential articulation rather than by semantic plenitude or imaginary coherence.

This concept appears in jacques-lacan-seminar-22 (p. 58), embedded in Lacan's late topological period, where the Borromean Knot serves as the primary formal apparatus for thinking the RSI triad. The One of the Signifier is positioned explicitly against the "One of Meaning" — an adjacent novel concept in the same passage — and both are distinguished from the objet petit a, which functions as their structural outside. It is therefore an extension and specification of the Symbolic register's logic as articulated through the Borromean framework: the Symbolic ring, as the canonical definitions note, is characterized by the "hole" and by ek-sistence, and the One of the Signifier names the operational principle by which that ring holds — pure differential substitutability.

In relation to the cross-referenced canonical concepts, the One of the Signifier is most directly the formal presupposition of Desire (which emerges from the gap the signifier installs) and of Metonymy (the sliding of meaning along the signifier chain, possible only because the signifier can "designate any signified whatsoever"). It contrasts with the Imaginary register's consistency — the domain of images and ego-formation — precisely by refusing any adherence to a particular content. It also stands in structural tension with the objet petit a: where the One of the Signifier operates through combinatory arbitrariness, the objet a marks a remainder that exceeds signification altogether, functioning as an irrational gap within the very structure the signifier underwrites.

The One of meaning is so little involved here that what it is as an effect, effect [is made up of] from the One of the signifier. We know it and I am insisting on it, the One of the signifier only operates in fact by being able to be employed to designate any signified whatsoever.

The quote is theoretically loaded because it enacts a strict asymmetry: "meaning" is demoted to a mere "effect" of the signifier, while the signifier's own operational principle — being deployable to "designate any signified whatsoever" — is identified as the source of the One's Symbolic force. The phrase "any signified whatsoever" is the crux: it names radical arbitrariness as the condition of the signifier's universality, directly echoing the Saussurean differential logic Lacan inherits and formalizes through the Borromean topology.
