Non-Contemporaneity
ELI5
History and consciousness are never fully "in sync" with themselves — there's always a leftover time-gap baked into how things work, and that gap doesn't get fixed; it's just what consciousness and history fundamentally are.
Definition
Non-contemporaneity, as deployed by Žižek in his reading of Hegel (mediated through Comay), names the structural principle whereby any historical totality is constitutively out of step with itself — anachronism is not a deficiency to be corrected by the dialectical process but rather what the dialectic is made of. Rather than treating temporal disjuncture as a provisional moment to be sublated into a higher unity, Žižek argues that the gap between moments, registers, or institutions is irreducible: it is the very "signature" of consciousness. Non-contemporaneity thus functions as a formal claim about how historical reality coheres — not by achieving synchrony but by maintaining an internal excess that keeps the totality structurally incomplete.
The concept carries a critical edge directed at triumphalist readings of Absolute Knowing. If Absolute Knowing were the moment in which Spirit becomes fully transparent to itself and all gaps are closed, non-contemporaneity would be its abolition. Žižek's move is precisely to deny this: Absolute Knowing does not overcome non-contemporaneity but formalizes it — it is the recognition that the anachronistic gap is permanent. The same structural logic is then mapped onto sexuality and the Hegelian "rabble": in both cases, Culture does not simply sublate natural substance but retroactively produces an un-natural excess that was never there before. Hegel, Žižek argues, himself falls short of his own standards at these points, missing what his own dialectics should have disclosed.
Place in the corpus
Non-contemporaneity appears once in the corpus, in slavoj-zizek-less-than-nothing-hegel-and-the-shadow-of-dialectical-materialism-v, as part of Žižek's broader argument about the limits and resources of Hegelian dialectics. Its most direct canonical anchor is Absolute Knowing: if Absolute Knowing names (in the post-Hegelian, Lacanian-inflected reading) the recognition of an absolute gap within self-identity rather than achieved self-transparency, then non-contemporaneity is the temporal specification of that same structure — the gap as anachronism, the way the split lives in time. Non-contemporaneity is therefore an extension and specification of the Absolute Knowing problematic, transposing the synchronic (self-identity vs. gap) into the diachronic (contemporaneity vs. structural lag).
It also intersects with Dialectics as theorized in the corpus: where dialectics risks being read as a progressive resolution of contradictions toward a synthesis, non-contemporaneity is precisely the principle that resists this. It aligns with what the corpus identifies as the "non-dialectizable remainder" — the excess that no sublation absorbs. The connection to Drive is more oblique but present: just as the drive achieves its satisfaction in the loop rather than at the goal, the dialectic here achieves its "result" not in synchrony but in the formalized persistence of the temporal gap. The cross-reference to Gap is self-evident: non-contemporaneity is what a gap looks like when read from the dimension of historical time rather than logical structure. Finally, the mention of sexuality and the "rabble" connects to Adaptation (Culture's failure to fully sublate nature produces an un-natural excess) and gestures toward Ideology and Interpellation as the sites where this retroactively produced excess is managed or misrecognized.
Key formulations
Less Than Nothing: Hegel and the Shadow of Dialectical Materialism (page unknown)
non-contemporaneity is for Hegel a principle … anachronism is the 'signature' of consciousness
The term "principle" is doing critical work: it elevates non-contemporaneity from an empirical observation about historical lag to a structural condition of consciousness as such. The word "signature" — placed in scare-quotes — further loads the claim: anachronism is not accidental noise but the identifying mark, the constitutive trace, by which consciousness can be recognized, making temporal disjuncture intrinsic to what it means to be conscious at all.
