Nomination Function

The Nomination Function designates the primordial, founding operation by which the proper name — and by extension all naming — sutures the hole of the subject rather than merely classifying or describing an entity. For Lacan in Seminar XII, nomination is not a subsidiary or derivative act within language but its most archaic and irreducible moment: it carries a status categorically opposed to that of enunciation or the predicate-sentence. Where enunciation and the sentence articulate relations among already-constituted elements (subject, verb, object), nomination is the act that constitutes the element as such — the brand or trace that, by entering into and modifying the real, installs something as a "thing" in the first place. The proper name is thus not an arbitrary label assigned to a pre-existing object but the phonematic mark that covers over the structural hole — lack — around which the subject and the thing are organized.

This formulation aligns nomination with the logic of the point de capiton: just as the quilting point retroactively arrests the sliding of the signifying chain, nomination is the most radical instantiation of anchoring — but it operates at a level prior to predication, closer to the trace or brand than to the sentence. Nomination installs the minimal condition for a thing to be registered as a thing rather than merely present in the real; it is, in this sense, the letter-as-scar, the mark that opens the symbolic by wounding the real. The function is therefore not communicative but ontological: it names the operation by which lack is introduced and simultaneously covered, producing the effect of identity (a proper name is precisely what cannot be further explained — it just is what it is).

Within jacques-lacan-seminar-12-1, the Nomination Function sits at the intersection of Lacan's accounts of Lack, the Letter, the Point de capiton, and the Signifier, but occupies a position prior to all of them in the genetic order of the symbolic. Where the point de capiton retroactively quilts a signifying chain already in motion, nomination is the more primordial act that produces the first mark — the brand, the trace — from which the chain can unfold. It is thus the zero-degree suture: what closes over the constitutive hole (Lack) at the moment a thing receives its name. The Letter, defined as the material support that concrete discourse borrows from language, finds in the proper name its most elementary instance — the letter as scar rather than as differential element in a chain.

At the same time, the Nomination Function is explicitly set against the enunciative or predicative dimension of Language. Where Language (in the developed Lacanian sense) operates as the structuring medium of the unconscious, full of metonymic displacement and metaphoric condensation, nomination is that which anchors the chain before it can run. This makes it a specification of the point de capiton logic extended backward to the genetic moment, and a specification of the Letter that foregrounds its real, brand-like quality rather than its differential-symbolic one. It also touches Particularism: the proper name is the most radical particularizer — it designates an individual without describing or classifying, making the function of nomination the structural ground for any singular, as opposed to merely particular, identity. As such, the Nomination Function can be read as an extension and radicalization of several canonical concepts, but applied to the founding act of the symbolic order itself rather than to any subsequent operation within it.

The explicit opposition to "enunciation or of the sentence" further marks a formal break within language itself, carving out nomination as the real or letter-like kernel that precedes and conditions all predication.
