Naturalization of Difference
ELI5
This concept describes how powerful forces make unfair differences between people — like who is rich and who is poor — seem as natural and inevitable as differences in height or eye color, when in fact those differences are created by political and economic systems that could be otherwise.
Definition
Naturalization of Difference is the ideological operation by which historically contingent, structurally produced socioeconomic and political inequalities are converted into apparently natural, biological, or quasi-ontological facts — as if the disparities between social positions were grounded in some pre-social substrate of "bare life" rather than in the contradictions of a given political-economic order. In Zupančič's argument (the-odd-one-in-on-comedy-alenka-zupancic), this naturalization is not a passive distortion of reality but an active, "politico-ideological process par excellence" — that is, it is the very mechanism through which ideology reproduces itself most forcefully. By anchoring differences in bodies, affects, and biological states, the process forecloses the possibility of reading those differences as symptoms of structural contradiction, thereby short-circuiting any dialectical or symptomatic analysis.
This operation is closely tied to what Zupančič theorizes as bio-morality: once differences are naturalized as biological, the inability of certain subjects to flourish can be recast as an index of inner, almost genetic deficiency rather than structural exclusion. The naturalization thus does double ideological work — it simultaneously depoliticizes inequality and moralizes it, converting a political question ("why do these differences exist?") into an apparent biological verdict ("some forms of life are simply more viable than others"). Laughter and the happiness imperative are deployed within this same ideological configuration, not as forms of resistance but as internal lubricants that render the naturalized order livable and self-confirming.
Place in the corpus
Within the-odd-one-in-on-comedy-alenka-zupancic, Naturalization of Difference functions as the ideological backdrop against which Zupančič positions comic subjectivity and the structural function of laughter. Comedy's incessant movement, its cuts and discontinuities, is set in direct opposition to this naturalization precisely because comedy short-circuits the smooth surface of the "natural" by staging contradiction and inconsistency — it refuses the ideological closure that naturalization requires. The concept is thus an extension and specification of Bio-Morality: where bio-morality names the short-circuit between biological affect and moral worth for individual subjects, Naturalization of Difference names the broader social-structural mechanism that makes entire categories of inequality appear as facts of nature rather than effects of ideology.
The concept also stands in productive tension with Contradiction and Dialectics as canonically defined in this corpus. A dialectical reading — in the Hegelian-Marxist sense articulated in the canonical definitions — insists on surfacing the internal tensions and structural antagonisms that produce social differences; Naturalization of Difference is precisely the ideological operation that suppresses this dialectical reading, presenting what is historically produced as eternally given. Similarly, where the canonical definition of Adaptation critiques any logic that naturalizes the subject's fit to its environment, Naturalization of Difference extends this critique from the level of the individual subject to the level of entire social strata — capitalism's celebrated Adaptation absorbs and biologizes difference just as ego psychology biologizes the subject's therapeutic goal. Zupančič's intervention is thus to identify naturalization not as an intellectual error but as a politico-ideological act with real material effects, one that the structural cuts of comedy can momentarily interrupt.

we are thus witnessing a massive and forceful naturalization of economic, political, and other social differences, and this naturalization is itself a politico-ideological process par excellence.
The phrase "politico-ideological process par excellence" is theoretically loaded because it refuses to treat naturalization as a mere error or epiphenomenon — by naming it a process and marking it as the exemplary ideological act, Zupančič insists that the conversion of "economic, political, and other social differences" into apparent natural facts is not incidental to contemporary ideology but its very core mechanism, the operation that most completely conceals the contingency and structural origin of inequality.

Introduction
Theoretical move: Zupančič argues that comic subjectivity resides not in any subject but in the incessant movement of comedy itself, and that this movement—with its cuts and discontinuities—is structurally opposed to the contemporary ideological imperative of happiness, which naturalizes socioeconomic differences into biological 'bare life' and deploys laughter as an internal condition of ideology rather than a resistance to it.
we are thus witnessing a massive and forceful naturalization of economic, political, and other social differences, and this naturalization is itself a politico-ideological process par excellence.
