Narrative Excess

Narrative Excess names the structural condition whereby any narrative — understood as a signifying system that attempts to organize, unify, and totalize meaning — necessarily generates a remainder that escapes its own closure. This excess is not an accident of poor construction or ideological miscalculation; it is internal to signification as such. Because the signifier is constitutively incomplete (it can only define itself by not being all other signifiers), no narrative can fully suture itself into a self-consistent whole. The excess is therefore the trace of the Real within the symbolic order: the point at which narrative's ambition to totality breaks down and its antagonistic kernel becomes legible.

The concept carries a specifically political-ideological valence in this context. Because narrative excess is internal rather than external to the ideological structure it inhabits, it cannot be dismissed as noise from outside the system.
