Nachträglich Action of the Signifier

ELI5

When the last word of a sentence arrives, it changes what all the earlier words meant — Lacan calls this the "nachträglich action of the signifier": meaning always works backwards, so that something that happened (or was said) earlier only gets its true significance once something later comes along to stitch it into place.

Definition

The "nachträglich action of the signifier" names the retroactive causality through which a signifier, once it takes its place in the chain, re-determines the meaning of what preceded it. In Freud's original usage, Nachträglichkeit (deferred action) designates the way a later experience — typically a second, sexually charged scene — retroactively transforms the meaning and traumatic weight of an earlier one that was not, at the time of its occurrence, comprehended as significant. Lacan appropriates and re-registers this mechanism within his structural linguistics: it is not two biographical experiences but two moments in the signifying chain that are at stake. Because a signifier's meaning is never self-contained but is always produced by its relation to what follows — the "point de capiton" or quilting-point being the privileged instance of this — the chain as a whole operates backwards: the arrival of a new signifier stitches retroactively across prior elements, endowing them with sense they did not carry in themselves. The quilting-point is precisely the signifier that stops meaning from sliding indefinitely by retroactively anchoring the chain.

Within the frame of Seminar V, this retroactive action is the structural engine behind the two key rhetorical figures Lacan is contrasting: metaphor and metonymy. Metonymy sustains desire by deferring the object along the chain — connection is always displaced forward — while metaphor produces a new meaning-effect by the substitution of one signifier for another, and this production is necessarily retroactive: the substituting signifier determines what the substituted signifier "always already" meant. The nachträglich action of the signifier is therefore not a merely temporal curiosity but the very mechanism by which the symbolic order constitutes meaning, and by which the unconscious — as "the discourse of the Other" structured like a language — exercises its determining pressure on the subject from a position that is, strictly speaking, after the fact.

Place in the corpus

This concept appears at the opening of jacques-lacan-seminar-5, where Lacan is explicitly recapitulating the theoretical ground of Seminars I–IV before turning to the "formations of the unconscious" (jokes, dreams, parapraxes). Its introduction alongside the quilting-point schema signals that it is foundational scaffolding for the entire year's inquiry. The nachträglich action of the signifier is most directly an extension and re-specification of the Metaphor canonical concept: metaphor's meaning-production is precisely retroactive, the substituting signifier determining what the replaced signifier "always already" signified. It also articulates with Desire through metonymy: desire's perpetual displacement along the chain is the forward-moving counterpart to meaning's backward determination. The concept implicitly draws on Automaton as well — the mechanical, repetitive insistence of the signifying chain is what makes retroactive re-determination structurally possible in the first place, since it is the chain's own combinatory logic, not biographical accident, that generates the nachträglich effect. Finally, the concept stands in contrast to Foreclosure: where foreclosure marks the failure of a signifier to be inscribed at all — leaving no anchor point and producing Real eruptions — the nachträglich action of the signifier presupposes successful inscription and describes the productive, retroactive quilting that inscription enables. The Imaginary register is implicitly subordinated here: meaning's retroactive constitution is a purely symbolic affair, with imaginary captures (the ego's insistence on presence and self-sufficiency) being precisely what the nachträglich structure undoes by showing that meaning is never where it first seems to be.

This provides us with the most tangible example of what can be called the nachträglich action of a signifier. This is precisely what I am constantly showing you in the text of analytic experience itself

The phrase "most tangible example" is theoretically charged because it insists that retroactive signifier-action is not an abstract logical claim but is directly readable in the clinical material of analytic experience — "the text of analytic experience itself" — thereby grounding the structural-linguistic account in Freudian practice and asserting that the analytic session is the privileged site where nachträglich causality becomes visible.

Theoretical move: Lacan recapitulates the theoretical trajectory of Seminars I–IV to frame the new topic of "formations of the unconscious," establishing that the signifier's primacy grounds both the symbolic determination of meaning and the structural distinction between metonymy (desire's object) and metaphor (emergence of meaning), while introducing the quilting-point schema and the retroactive (*nachträglich*) action of the signifier as the key apparatus for the year's investigation.
